Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARRIE M. GRAVES, OF MELROSE, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN HOLMES, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
DESIGN FOR CROCHETED FABRIC.
Specification forming part of Design No. 1 L558. dated December 30, 1879; application filed December 8, 1879. [Term of patent 31} years] To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARRIE M. GRAVES, of Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have originated and de signed a Crocheted Fabric having a peculiar stitch, which adds to the appearance ofthe said fabric and makesit decidedly attractive; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, in connection with the accompanying photographic illustration, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The crotcheted fabric the subject of this design is made of Wool or other yarn crocheted to form shell-like portions a; but instead of joining the ends of the separate loops composing the longer edges of the said shells, as heretofore common in crocheted Work, I connect them by a series of so-called purled stitches b. This purled edge is made upon the shells forming the body of the fabric, and each shell has one of its side edges made shorter th an its other edge, and is so connected with the adjacent shell, as shown, as to cause the longer purled edges of the shells of the body of the fabric or crocheted article to stand or curve upward, as is particularly noticeable at the central part of the photographic illustration.
I am aware thatit is not new to provide shell-stitches forming the border of a fabric or article with a purled edge; but I am not aware that shell-stitches at the body of the fabric have ever been purled and shortened at one side so as to cause each shell of the body of the fabric to round or curve upward above the base-line of each shell.
I claim The herein-described design for the body of a crocheted fabric, it consisting of crotcheted shells a, having their longer edges purled, as at b, and with the said shells made and joined together to cause the said purled edges to curve or bend upward, all as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CARR-IE M. GRAVES.
Witnesses:
G. W. GREGORY, N. E. O. WHITNEY.
