Description

THOMAS G. CLIFFORD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSLF AND WILLIAM B. CLIFFORD, OF SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 99,847, dated February 15, 1870.
IMPROVED FOLDING- BEDSTEAD.
VThe Schedule referred to in' these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS G. Gmnnon, of N ew York, in the county of New York, and State o' New York, have invented a new Improvement in Folding Bedstead; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specition, and represent in Figure 1, a perspective view closed;
Figure 2, a side view open; and in Figure 3, a longitudinal central section open.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding bedstend, designed to represent, when closed, abnreau, the object being a cheap construction, and consists in a case divided-into two parts', vertically, and these two parts hinged together at the bottom, and each ofthe two parts provided at the top with legs, so as to be turned down out of the way when not in use, and yet rigid and strong when turnedont for use, and all of i theparts mede so as to fold compactly when not in use.
A B are the two parts, divided vertically, and hinged at the lower edge at a, so that the two parts will open, the one from the other, into the position denoted in fig. 2.
C and D are the legs arranged upon the two parts,
one upon each side, fitting into a recess in the side oi" the case, and slotted, so that when turned out from the recess they may be set back into a recess at right angles to the rst, so that by the said recess they will be held in position, projecting from the case as denoted in broken lines, fig. 1, andas shown in iig. 2.
On the front a base, E,'passes across, forming at its extreme end legs to support the front ol' the case.
Immediately in the rear of this base are two blocks f, one at each extreme of the base, ezich block provided with a shank, so as to fit into a hole in the base, and when inserted from the rear the shank will lill the hole in front, and when the case is to be opened these blocks are removed and inserted into the front, as denoted in broken lines, fig. 1, and as seen in iigs. 2 and 3; at the same time the base E folds beneath the part A, and serves as a support for that part, as denoted in lig. 3.
L is a board set into the part A to form n bottom for the said part when set up, but when open is made removable, so as to be attached for a head or footboznd, as the case may be.
I is the rear leg, (one upon each side,) formed so as to passover the base when the case is open.
The two parts, when closed, are secured together by hooks M, or other suitable device.
The under mattress should be formed in two parts, y
P and P', the upper so as to fold as denoted in broken lines, fig. 3. When the case is open, as in tig. 2, the blocks or legs f must be taken from the rear and placed in front, the legs C and'D placed in position, tlien the board L removed and placed in position, and the case is ready for use.
It will be observed that the upper part may be lilled with drawers, provided the height be more than half the length of the mattress, and small drawers may be placed upon the top of the part A.
I am aware that bedsteads have been constructed in the form of various articlesA of furniture, so as to fold, and I do not ,wish to be understood as broadly claiming a folding bedstend; but what I do claim as my invention is- The case, divided centrally into the two partsA and B, euch provided with folding legs C and D, arranged s'o as to be xed as described, and also with the central supports f, the whole being constructed, combined and arranged so as to be opened or set up as described.
