To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ARCHIE BOR- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mina, in the county of Esmeralda and State of Nevada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in wrenches and is particularly devised as an improvement in that class of wrenches known as-the Stilson wrench; the object of the invention being to provide the ordinary stationary jaw of a Stilson wrench with a magazine chamber in which is positioned a movable jaw, the said movable jaw having one of its faces provided with teeth and the chamber or magazine being provided with a yoke having teeth engaging the teeth of the said movable aw to retain the said jaw within the casing against the tension of a helical spring the yoke being easily swung out of engagement with the teeth of the sliding jaw so as to allow the said sliding jaw to adjust itself longitudinally in relation to the stationary jaw, thus providing a quick acting wrench which is automatically opened and wherein the sliding jaw may be easily and quickly slid within the casing.
With the above, and other objects in view which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the wrench proper. This wrench comprises what may be termed a stationary clamp 2 provided with the usual jaw 3 and a handle 4:.
The numeral 5 designates the movable jaw of the wrench. This jaw 5 has one of its faces provided with a plurality of transversely extending teeth 6 and has its opposite face provided with teeth 7. The jaw 5 is mounted within a suitable casing 8, the latter having a projecting side portion which is pivotally connected with the stationary jaw 3 as at 9. The side portion comprises what may betermed a housing 10, and one of the walls of the said housing is adapted to be contacted by a flattened spring 11 which is secured to the engaging face of the stationary jaw as at 12. The shank or stationary member 2 is provided with a second flattened spring 13 which is adapted to contact with the face of the casing 8 and to compensate for the pressure of the spring 11 to normally retain the chamber 8 and the jaw 5 carried thereby in a plane substantially parallel to the shank 2. The casing 8 is provided with a transversely extending pin 14:, and the shank of the jaw 6 is provided with a longitudinally extending opening 15, the pin being disposed within the said opening and being also adapted to limit the travel of the shank of the movable jaw in either direction. Positioned between the rear end of the shank of the movable jaw 5 and closed face of the casing S is a helical spring 16, the same being adapted at all times to exert pressure upon the jaw 5 so as to force the same out of the casing 8.
The numeral 17 designates what I term a yoke. This yoke 17 has its side arms pivotally connected as at 18 with the casing 8 and the said yoke has its connecting member provided with a plurality of teeth 19 which extend through a suitable opening within the casing 8 and which engage the teeth 6 of the movable jaw 5. The yoke 17 has its teeth 19 normally retained in engagement with the teeth 6 of the movable jaw 5 through the medium of a flattened spring 20, which has its free end secured to the top of the casing 8.
Briefly described, the operation of the improved wrench is as follows :We will suppose that the operator desires to separate the stationary and the movable jaws so as to adjust the same upon a pipe, or the like. The operator will simply grasp the side arm of the yoke 17 so as to raise the teeth 19 out of engagement with the teeth 6. The helical spring 16 exerting pressure between the slidable jaw and the closed end of the casing 8 will force the said jaw the full limit of its slot 15 until contacted by the pin 14. If the distance between the jaws is too great to properly receive the pipe a slight pressure upon the head of the movable jaw 5 will quickly return the said jaw to its proper position upon the pipe, the
teeth 6 being so inclined as to allow the backward .movement of the shank of the jaw 5 and the toothed portion 19 of the yoke 17 under the pressure of the spring 20 will prevent the outward movement of the jaw 5 from its casing 8.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A stationary jaw, a casing pivotally connected with the stationary jaw, a movable shank within the casing provided with a jaw, a spring within the casing normally exerting pressure betweeen the shank and the said casing, said shank being provided with teeth, and a spring pressed yoke normally engaging the teeth of the shank.

A stationary jaw, a casing pivotally connected with the stationary jaw, the casing being provided adjacent one of its ends andto the rear of its pivot with a housing, a spring connected with the stationary jaw and engaging the housing, a movable shank within the casing provided with a aw, a spring within the casing normaly exerting pressure between the shank and casing, and a spring pressed yoke normally engaging the shank.
