Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 4, 1916.
Application led April 27, 1914. Serial No. 834,569.
To all wiz-0m t may concern VBe it known that I, DAVID STEWART, aV subject of. Great Britain, Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches, of which the following is a speci; fication.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the Vnovel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
eference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Similar characters'refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a view in side elevation of my improved pipe-wrench. Fig. 2 is a central, vertical, longitudinal section of the same.
This invention relates to the type of wrench which has toothed jaws, one of which is movable longitudinally toward and from, and is also movable transversally `or laterally with relation to, theother jaw, by means of which lateral movement said jaws are adapted to bite cr lock upon the pipe 0r other article to which the wrench is applied. v
The present invention constitutes an improvement upon the construction shown and described in Patent No. 1,060,374, granted to me April 29, 1913.
The principal objects of the present invention are to simplify the construction and facilitate the operation of the wrench; to render more effective such lateral movement of one jaw relatively to the other; and to facilitate releasing the jaws. Other objects will appear in connection with the following description.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1V represents a housing preferably formed as a cored casting. The stationary toothed jaw, 2, has a shank, 4, secured within an opening in the front end of the housing by means of a rivet, 5. The housing is formedwith a slideway adapted to receive a movable jaw-member having on its front end an offset toothed jaw, 3, and terminating at its rear end in a screw-threaded portion, 6, which is engaged by an operating nut, 7, rotatively coniined .within slots, 8, in the walls of the housing and projecting from residing atmanner to permit of ready rotation of the nut-b y hand. The intermediate portion of said jaw-member is of general oblong rectangular form in cross-section loosely f1tting the slideway in the housing and capamore or less vertical movement, as well as longitudinal sliding movement, therewithin.
The operating handle-lever, l0, is pivot-y ally mounted upon the housing, at l1, said lever having its inner end, l5, adapted to bear upon a smooth cylindrical portion, 16, of the operating nut, 7, with which it is yieldingly held in contact by means of a coil-spring, 12, interposed between the handle-lever, 10, and overhanging rear-portion, 13, of the housing. The housing is formed with an abutment or stop, 9, located in the path of an offset, 14, on the inner end of the handle-lever, l0, whereby the springinduced movement of the handle-lever is limited to prevent the nut, 7, from being forced upward so far as to bind against the top part of the housing.
In using the. wrench, it is applied to the pipe, 17, to embrace the pipe between the jaws, 2 and 3,' and the nut, 7, is rotated to cause. the pipe to be loosely gripped between the jaws, 2 and 3. Downward pressure applied to the handle-lever, 10, to rotate the pipe, 17, will cause the teeth on the movable jaw, 3. to bite upon the pipe, and said teeth bite with increased force as the pipe tends to resist rotation. During` such operation, the inner screw-end of the movable jawmember is yieldingly supported in elevated position by the inner end of the handle-le` ver, 10, causing-the movable jaw-member, 3, to be presented to the pipe at the most favorable working angle. An upward pull upon the handle-lever, l0, serves to release the jaws by removing the support, l5, from beneath the nut, 7, permitting the screwend of the movable jaw-member to drop, thereby causing the jaw-member, 3, to swing slightly away from the pipe, 17, to release the pipe.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a wrench. and in combination, a housing; an inner jaw mounted upon the housing; an outer jaw-member having on its inner end a screw and having on its outer end an offset jaw complementary to said inner jaw, said outer jaw-member being slid ably mounted Within said housing and eawith s aid nut, and by its movement permit- 10 pable of transverse movement therewithin; ting said transverse movement of said nut. an operating nut Yfor saidy screwv acoessibly Intestimony whereof, I have hereunto set and loosely confined Within said housing my hand this 24th day of April, 1914.
land capable of movement transversely to DAVID STEWART the longitudinal axis of the Wrench to oon-MV trol the movement of the outer jaw; and a Witnesses: handle-lever pivotally mounted upon said CHARLES HUNTER,
housing having its inner end engageable JAMES M. DOW.
