CHRISTPHOR ALPI-IIN, OF KINSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 18, 1911.
Application filed August 10, 1909. Serial No. 512,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRIsTPHoR ALPHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kinston, in the county of Lenoir and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Chimney Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lamp chimney holders, and the ob'ect is to provide a simple and inexpensive f0 dable article of manufacture consisting of few and light elastic parts which will embrace the chimney equally and yet yieldingly from four approximately equidistant points, thus preventing it from accidentally leaving its place on the burner and holding it down securely upon the latter, thus assuring a good and equally distributed draft of air to the flame.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in a ring of thin sheet metal fitted to and adapted to embrace the chimney about midway of its length and provided with an outwardly extending flange in connection with bowed arms made of spring wire, which are hinged to the flange at approximately equidistant points, these bowed arms being adapted to spread around and snugly and yet yieldingly embrace the bulged portion of the lamp chimney and spiral springs which extend from the lower end of the bows and hook into the burner.
My invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a view in side elevation showing my improved chimney holder in position, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the chimney itself.
The ring, A, is stamped preferably from thin sheet metal and adapted to embrace the chimney above the bulged portion. Its lower edge is provided with an outturned flange, 1, which gives strength and rigidity to the ring and also afi'ords stock to receive the bow springs, 8, 3. These are composed each of a single wire bent approximately into V-shape and bowed outwardly through the center rather than straight, whereby to embrace the enlarged portion of the chimney as shown in Fig. 1, the upper free ends be ing inserted in holes in the flange of the ring and bent together as shown at 4, 4, whereas the lower ends are twisted into a loop 5, 5, and the spiral springs 6, 6 extend from these loops downwardly to the burner B, to which they are hooked as shown in Fig. 1. The bow springs are sufficiently flexible so that they readily spread and yield to the contour of the bulged portion of the chimney, thus equalizing the strain and embracing the chimney from four different oints and areas. In this way I provide a simple little article of manufacture which may be easily applied and, when not in use, folded into small compass.
More or less slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction herein set forth, but:
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
As an article of manufacture, a lampchimney holder comprising a ring adapted to embrace the chimney above the bulge, said ring having an out-turned flange provided with orifices, bow-springs which are curved to approximately correspond/to the bulge of the chimney and twisted at the center to form a loop, the ends of the springs being bent and passed through the orifices in the flange to connect the springs to the latter, and helical springs having fastening means at each end, the fastening means at one end of each helical spring passing through the loops of the bow springs, and the fastening means at the other ends thereof adapted to engage a burner.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CI-IRISTPHOR ALPI-IIN.
