Description

R. W. GEE.
GATE LATCH. APPLICATION FILED 00127, 1910.
Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
- To all whom itsniay concern:
vide a latch plate 1 on ROBERT W. GEE, 0F MONTPELIER, IDAHO.
PATENT OFFICE;
GATE-LATCH.
Be it knowngthatl, Ronen'r IV. G an, a citizen- 'of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Bear Lake and stateiof ldalio, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Gate-Latches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in gate latches.- f
One object ofthe invention isto provide an improved gate latch adapted to automatically fasten the gate when swung to a closed osition. Another object is to provide a latch having a keeper adapted to be adjustably secured to the latch post of the gate to compensate for any sag in'the gate or leaning of the latch post. 1
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. 1
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view ofa portion of a gate and a latch post showing the application of my improved latch; Fig. 2 is a front elevation partly in section of the keeper plate of the latch; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the latch plate a'nd'pin; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the latch pin; Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line-5-5 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment ofthe invention I prothe outer side of which are formed upper and lower laterally projecting pin supporting lugs 2 in which are formed alined passages with which is slidably engaged the latch pin 3. The lugs 2 may be formed in any suitable manner but are here shown as being cut from the metal and bent outwardly at right angles to the plate.
The latch pin 3 consists of a rod of sufficient length to project above and below the lugs- 2. 7 rod is bent into a horizontally disposed loop to form a handle while the lower end of the pin projects a sufficient distance below the lower lug to engage the keeper hereinafter described. In the .pin 3 below the upper lug 2 is formed an eye through which.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 27, 1910. Serial No. 589,417.
The projecting upper end of the Patented Apr. 4, 1911.
is adapted to be inserted a cotter pin 5 or any other suitable form of pin" whereby a stop is provided which, when the pin is raised will engage the upper lug 2 and thus prevent the pin from rising so far as to disengage the lower end thereof from the lower lug 2. In the pin 3 adjacent to the lower end thereof is formed a second eye 5 with which is adapted to be engaged any suitable form of locking pin or adlock (not shown), but by means of which the pin may be locked in engagement with its keeper hereinafter described thereby fastening the gate in closed position.
The latch plate 1 is provided with elongated screw holes or slots l adapted to receive fastening screws whereby the plate may be adjustably secured to the gate.
The keeper for the latch comprises a plate 6 having formed on its upper'end a right 'angularly projecting keeper or latch lug 7 which is provided with a centrally disposed elongated pin receiving aperture or slot 8 with which the lower pro ecting end of the in is adapted to be engaged when the gate is swung to a closed position. The lug 7 has its side edges turned down or inclined as at 9 whereby when the gate is swung to a closed osition and the end of the pin thus brought into engagement with the latch lug the inclined surface of the lug will lift the pin thus permitting the gate to swing to a full closed position at which time the end of the pin will engage and drop into the aperture 8 in the lug thereby securely latching the gate in closed position. Then it is desired to open the gate the handle of the pin is grasped and the latter drawn upwardly out of engagement with the lug 7 of the keeper, thus permitting the swung open in either direction. If it should be desired to lock the gate in closed position a cotter pin or padlock may be enga ed with the aperture 5 in the lower end of the pin below the lug 7 of the keeper thus preventmg the raising or disengagement of i the latch pin from the keeper.
The keeper plate 6 is provided with elongated bolt or screw holes 6 with which are adapted to be engaged fastening screws or bolts whereby the plate is adjust ably secured to the latch post and together with the latch plate 1, may be'adjusted vertically to compensate for any sag or leaning which may gate to bev lug? will preventany binding of the latch :Pi'iT'KVlllCh might be occasioned by the sag- *ging of the gate or leaning of the post.
' "From the foregoing description taken in finection with the accompanying draw- 'ings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without 'requiring a more extended explanation. Various changes in the form, proportion v1,0 and the minor details of construe ion may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any-of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended c aim.-
15 Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s:
The combination with a latch post, and a gate mounted to swing past said post, of a ,1 latch plate secured on the end of the gate v: 20 and provided near its upper and lower ends with lugs projecting toward the post, a vertica-lly slidable latch pin mounted in send lugs and provided at its upper end with a handle adapted to rest upon the upper lug and provided at its lower end with an aper- 25 ture adapted to receive a locking device,-a stop on the latch-pin between the lugs, and a keeper platesecured-to the post and provided with a lug projecting into the path of the latch pin and having its sides diver'g-s30 n'esses.
