IVVENTOR WITNESSES 13 5 ELDRED MJ'HBBLER.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELDRED MARSHEL HIBBLER, OF IRIS, MISSISSIPPL' CANE-KNIFE.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, ELDRED M. HIBBLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Iris, in the County of Coahoma and State of Mississippi, have made certain new and useful Improvenents in Cane-Knives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in cane knives, and consists in certain novel constructons and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure l is a side View, partly in section, of a cane cutter enbodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the butt end of the blade. Fig. 3 is a detail section on about line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the blade holding sections, and Figs. 5, G and 7 are side Views, partly in section, illustrating different 'forms of handle parts.
The blade A, has at its butt end a toothed construction for coperation with the blade holding sections and conprises teeth concentrie with a bolt hole A', and comprising laterally projecting teeth A around the blade A and projecting laterally from the face of the butt plate A and a series oi? radially projecting teeth A* along the curved edge of the said butt plate as shown in Fig. 2. These teeth A and A* enter co'responding notches B and B in the inner faces of the cheek plates B of the blade holding sections B, the latter having central bolt holes B" which register with the hole A in the butt plate A when the partis are assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. The sections B are alike and have the cheek plates 13 the half bolts .B of the two sections N combining to form a bolt to screw into the socket C' of the handle as will be understood from Fig. 1 of the drawing. When thus serewed into the handle the bolt stern of the blade holding sections B may be Secured to the handle by a cross bolt, as best shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the sections B being clamped together and upon the intermediate butt plate A of the blade A, by the clamping devices consisting, as shown, of the bolt E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. Manifestly by this Construction, the blade A can be set to any desired angle and Secured in such Specfieation of Letters Patent.

position and thus be adapted :tor use in any manner desired.
The handle is shown as composed of sections united together by threading a tenon at the end of one section into a socket in the end of the adjacent section and I show in Fig. 5, a bent handle section F, and in Fig. (i a grip section Gr, while in Fig. 7 I show a straight handle section I, and a short intermediate section J. Manifestly, these sections may be used interchangeably to adapt the knife for use as a scythe, as an ordinary cane eutter, and for use in close quarters. In the latter case the handle G, may be coupled directly with the handle C shown in Fig. 1. Manifestly, the thimble and brad Construction as shown at the joint between the sections I and J in Fig. 7 may be employed if desired whenever two sections are jointed together.
I claim:
1. A' eutter substantially as herein described eomprising a blade having at one end a butt plate provided with a bolt hole and concentric therewith with curved series of laterally projecting teeth, and with teeth projecting radially from the ?free edge of the butt plate, blade holding sections having check plates provided with central openings to register with that in the butt plate of the blade, and having concentric sockets to receive the laterally and radially projecting teeth of the butt plate, the said cheek plates being provided with half-bolts adapted to lap side by side and combined to form a bolt, a handle having a socket receiving said bolt, and a clampin bolt passing through the concentric openmgs of the butt plate and the check plates and binding said plates together, substantially as set forth.
2. A cutter comprising a blade having a butt plate provided along its 'free edge wth a curved series of radially projecting teeth, and having a concentric series of laterally projecting teeth on the opposite side of its center from said radially projecting teeth, and blade holding sections having cheek plates lapping on opposite sides of the butt plate and held thcreto, substantially as set forth.
3. The cutter heroin described eomprising a blade having at one end a butt plate provided on its opposte sides With curved series With means for connection With the handle of laterally projectng teeth and at its edge and means for clamping the cheek plates to 10 With teeth projecting radially from the free .the butt plate, substantially as set' forth. I
tions having cheek plates provided With concentric soekets to receive the laterally Witnesses:
and radially projecting teeth of the butt W. G. LAUDERS, plate, the said cheek plates being provided S. T CARR.
