ceases.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY L. WEBSTER and JOHN G. Romae, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saws, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to saws, particularly compass saws, and the object thereof is to provide means in a manner as hereinafter set forth whereby the saw blade can be set at any desired angle with respect to the handle so as to enable one to cut in corners or close places where it is almost impossible to operate with an ordinary compass blade.
Further objects of the invention. are to provide an adjustable coupling connection between the saw blade and the handle and which shall be simple in its construct-ion, strong, durable, conveniently adjustable, readily set up with respect to the blade and handle, and inexpensive to manufacture.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a compass saw in accordance with this invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan, and.v Figs. 3, 4.-, and are details illustrating the coupling elements.
Referring to the drawings iu detail, 1 denotes a saw blade having` at its inner end a longitudinally extending slot 2.
3 denotes a saw handle having at one end a longitudinally extending slot et.
The reference characters 5, 6, and 7 denote a series of coupling members, the member having a semispherical end as at 8 and a plurality of openings 9, the member (3 at one end is formed with a semi-spherical portion 10 which opposes the semi-spherical portion S of the member 5 so as to provide a socket 11 for the reception of a spherical body 12 connected by the rivet 13 to one end of the member 7. The member 7 is Speccation of Letters Patent.

slotted as at 14 and extends into the spherical body 12 as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the rivet 13 extending through that end of the member 7 which is arranged in the spherical body. Although the spherical body 12 as shown is formed separate from the member .7, yet it may be cast integral therewith or formed in any other suitable manner. The member G is provided with a pair of openings 15 and an opening 1G, the latter being of greater diameter than either of the openings 15.
By setting up the coupling members in the manner as stated, and when the spherical body 12 is positioned within the socket 11, a universal connection is formed between the members 7, and the members 5, 6, such universal connection being in the form of a ball and socket joint as is evident.
The member 7 extends in the slot 4 of the handle 3 and is clamped to the handle 3 through the medium of the clamping screws 17, 1S, which extend in the slotted end of the handle 3 and through the slot let of the member 7. Tashers 1Sa are provided upon the screw 17 which abuts against one side of the slotted end of the handle El. The slot.- ted end of the saw blade 1 is positioned between the. members 5, 6, and clamped thereto by the clamping screws 19, 2O and 21. The screws 19 and 20 abut against the member 6, extend through the openings 15, the walls of which are not screw-threaded, and engage in a pair of openings 5, the walls of which are screw-threaded llVhen the binding screws 19 and 20 are driven home, they clamp the slotted end of the saw blades between the members 5, G. The clamping screw 20 is of greater length than the screw 19 so that the head 22 thereof can be conveniently reached for adjusting the screw 20, owing to the fact that the screw 20 is positioned in close proximity to the semispherical end of the member 6. The slotted end of the blade 1 is engaged by the head 23 of the screw 21 owing to the fact that the head 23 is positioned in the opening 16. By such an arrangement the head 23 clamps the slotted end of the saw blade against the inner face of the member The screw 21 engages in the central opening of the series of openings 9. The screws 19, 20 and 21 extend through the slot 2 of the saw blade 1.
By the foregoing construction, when the clamping screws 19, 20 and 21 are loosened,
the members 5, 6, can be adjusted to any preferred angle with respect to the handle 3. The screws 19, 20 and 2l are then driven home whereby the saw blade is iiXed in its adjusted position. By loosening the screw 2l as well as the screws 19 and 20, the blade l can be adjusted longitudinally with respect to the members 5 and 6. By such an arrangement the saw blade can be adjusted to any desired angle with respect to the handle when occasion so requires and which enables one to cut holes in corners or close places where it is almost impossible to operate with an ordinary saw.
What we claim is:
l. A coupling device for a saw blade comprising a coupling' member adapted to be connected to the handle of the saw, a pair of coupling members adapted to be attached to the saw blade, a universal connection between said first mentioned coupling member and said pair of coupling members, means for clamping said pair of coupling members together and to the saw blade, and means engaging the saw blade for clamping it to one of the members of said pair of coupling members.
2. A coupling device for saw blades comprising a longitudinally slotted member provided with a spherical end and adapted to beremovably connected to a saw handle, a pair of coupling members each formed with a semi-spherical end, said pair of coupling members adapted to be arranged in parallelism with respect to each other whereby the semi-spherical ends will oppose each other to form a socket for the reception of the spherical end ot' said slotted member whereby a universal connection is formed between said members, one of the members of said pair of coupling members provided with screw-threaded openings and the other of said members having a series oit openings one ot which is of greater diameter than the other, said pair of coupling members adapted to receive a saw blade therebetween, and means extending through one of the members of said pair oi members and engaging` in certain of the screw-threaded openings of the other of said members for clamping the saw blade to said members and for clamping the semi-spherical ends oit said members to said spherical end of the slotted member whereby said pair of members can be maintained in an adjusted position with respect to a saw handle.
3. A coupling device for saw blades comprising a longitudinally slot-ted member provided with a spherical end and adapted to be removably connected to a saw handle, a pair of coupling members each formed with a semi-spherical end, said pair of coupling members adapted to be arranged in parallelism with respect to each other whereby the semi-spherical ends will oppose each other to form a socket for the reception of the spherical end ot said slotted member whereby a universal connection is formed between said members, one of the members of said pair of coupling members provided with screw-threaded openings and the other of said members having a series of openings one ot which is ot greater diameter than the other, said pair of coupling members adapted to receive a saw blade therebetween, and means extending through one ot the members of said pair of members and engaging in certain of the screw-threaded openings of the other of said members for clamping the saw blade to said members and for clamp ing the semi-spherical ends of said members to said spherical end ot the slotted member whereby said pair of members can be maintained in an adjusted position, and means arranged in the enlarged opening of one of the members of said pair of members aud engaging in the other screw-threaded opening for clamping` the saw blade to that member of said pair ot members which is provided with the screw-threaded openings.
In testimony whereof we attix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
