SHOE-SOLE CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24., 1911.
Application filed March 17, 1910. Serial No. 550,021.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL C. SMrrr-r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Sole Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to clamps for retaining sheets or strips assembled while being fastened together such, for instance, as in the building of shoe soles wherein sheets of. leather are required to be held together while being sewed or if adhesive material used, to hold the sheets until they adhere, and the principal object of the same is to provide the clamp of a single length of resilient material that is provided with opposed gripping jaws that are held in adjustable relation.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the clamp showing the same applied to the sole of a shoe.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the clamp is composed primarily of a thin strip of elongated flat resilient metal which preferably tapers longitudinally and is bent to provide a straight flat body 1, one end portion of which forms a flat jaw 2 the gripping surface of which is corrugated or otherwise roughened as indicated at 3. An opening at is formed through jaw 3. A gripping jaw 5 is connected to jaw 3 by the curved neck 6, said jaw 5 obviously overlapping jaw 3 and having its grip ping surface roughened as indicated at 7 complemental to the roughened surface of jaw 3. Jaw 5 is provided with a boss 8 through which a threaded opening 9 is formed, said opening 9 being in alinenient with opening 4: of jaw 3 and being of smaller diameter. At the outer end of jaw 5 the strip of metal is bent rearwardly and overlaps jaw 5 as indicated at 10 which arrangement obviously prevents a sharp edge being presented by the outer end of said jaw 5 such as might injure an article with which the clamp is engaged.
A set screw is employed for adjustingjaws 3 and 5, said screw having a flattened head 11, a collar 12 and the usual threaded shank 13. Said shank [its loose in opening 4 of jaw 3 with its collar 12 bearing against the outer surface of jaw 3 and has a threaded engagement with the opening 9 through boss 8 of jaw 5.
It will be clear from the foregoing that by manipulating the set screw, jaws 3 and 5 may be relatively adjusted to regulate their pressure upon articles clamped by the same. It will also be seen that as the clamp is formed of resilient material, it may be readily slipped over the edges of the articles to be clamped, the elongated flat body 1 obviously forming a guiding means which facilitates the proper positioning of the jaw in engagement with opposite surfaces of the articles.
lVhat I claim as my invention is As a new article of manufacture, a clamp formed of a single strip of elongated flat resilient material shaped to provide a body having a gripping jaw at one end portion, said jaw provided with an opening, a second jaw overlap ing the first-mentioned jaw and provided with a boss through which a threaded opening is formed, the said strip at the outer end of the second mentioned jaw being bent rearward over said jaw, and an adjusting screw passing loosely through the opening of the first-mentioned jaw and engaging the threaded opening of the second mentioned jaw.
