To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CARL AUGUST PFEN- .NING, a subject of the Emperor of Germany,

residing at Barmen-Rittershausen, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Boots and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to fasteners having a ive fasteners with such a low stud, since the tension, especially in new shoes, of the leather or other material of the uppers renders it almost impossible by simple pressure with the hand to bring the top down upon the stud in the correct position to unite the partsthat is, to fasten the shoe. For the purpose of overcoming this defect I provide on the disk of the stud a suitably-formed projecting part, which lies beyond the edge of the fastenertop. Such projecting part affords a hold to the finger and also renders possible the employment of a buttoner for fasteners with low stud, inasmuch as the projecting part referred to presents a point of support for the buttoner.

The appended drawings illustrate my new fastener drawn to a much enlarged scale.

Figure 1 is an elevation of the top part of the fastener applied to a portion of the bootupper. Fig. 1 is a like view of the stud part similarly applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the stud part. Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the application of a buttoner for the purpose of closing the fastening; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the top part as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 4 illustrates the application of a buttoner to a modified construction of the stud portion of the fastener.

The distance of the part c from the stud must be so great that the top (1 on being pressed down upon the-stud is not prevented from lying closely against the disk. This projection o affords a hold for the finger, whereby the stud part of the fastening can be drawn toward the top part, while the latter, on account of its size and of its projecting free above the leather, can be sufficiently grasped with the other finger to bring it over the stub 17. The latter remains in quite free position, so that the top part in engaging the stud is no way obstructed by the finger which is applied to the projection c. The buttoner for such a fastener consists of two shanks g h, linked together by a member-f. In applying such buttoner the projection 0 serves as support for the one shank it (see Fig. 3) when the turned-over end of the other shank g seizes the top d. Hitherto the top 61 has had to be made higher than the stud b by an amount equal to the thickness of the shank h, since otherwise the top d does not sufficiently grip over the stud. The consequence is that the top does not tightly fit against the stud after removal of the buttoner, and owing to the pull upon the upper end of the stud during wear the stud portion will tilt and press into the foot of the wearer. By means of the projection 0, however, a buttoner can be employed also for fasteners with flat or low stud, which, as already stated, is the only kind suitable for foot-gear.
