Description

Anew .s1-w.

' Letters .Patent No. 98,252,
dated December 28, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SEED-SOWER AND yHARRO'W.
'lhe Schedule referred to in these Letters *Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. D. GRAY, of Charlton, in the county of Lucas, and State ot Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Seed-Sewer andV Harrow; and I do-hereby declare that the followingis a 'full and exactdescription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.-
lhis invention has for its object the production of an improved agricultural.machinby means of which small seeds may be sown and covered at the same time; and to that end,
It consists in certain details of construction-hereinafter fully described, whereby the seed-sowing and covering devices .are harmoniously united'andv operated in a single machine.
In the drawings- Figure 1 represents a proved machine.
Figure 2, a sectional elevation through the line x-x, iig. 1.
Figure 3 represents views of parts'detached.
To enable others skilled in thevart vto make and use my invention, I will now proceed-to fully describe its` operation and construction.
A represents the axle ofthe machine, supported by the wheelsa (t.
B. represents the pole, which is united, at its rear end, to the axle A in any suitable manner.
Upon the axle A and pole B rests the main frame of the machine, which consists ot the longitudinal beams C O, and`transveise beams c c c.
To the rear ends'oi' the beam CC are attached,y by hinges, the short beams D D, -iu which are provided hearings for the toothed roller E, as shown in the drawings.
F represents a bowed bar or rod, by means of which the beams D' D are connected 'I o this rod also is attached the rear end of the lever G, .which latter has its fulcrum in the standard g, as shown.
'lo retain the lever in any desired position, the rack' bar H is provided, in any of the notches of which', the
perspective view of my im- :lever may be caught.
I represents the seed-hopper, which is provided with" a perforated bottom, and also with a perforated slide,
J, as shown in fig. 2.
This slide, at one end, extends outward beyond the hopper far enough to come into contact withthe wheel K, located on the axle A, as shown.
The face of the wheel K .is provided with triangular-shaped indentations, so that the slide' J, b y its contact with it, receives a regular reciprocatin'grnotion, its'returnv movement being'calised by the spring j, as shown in tig. 2.
For the purpose of removing the slide J from contact with the wheel K, when it is desired to cease the operation of sowing, I provide the lever L, which is attached to the slide by means of the slotted connecting-rod l-and pin l.
To regulate the movement of the lever, I- employ any'suitable stop-device. Asiruple piu, as shown at x, will answer every purpose.
M represents a belt, which passes over the wheel K and c, by means of which a rapid motion is communicated to the rollerE. A
m m represent pulley-guides, by ,moans of which the belt is kept in place..
For the purpose of preventing the wheels a d from communicating motion to the seeding or coverlng-de-'f vices when the machine is backing or turning, I make them loose upon the axle, and provide them with suitable ratcliet-devices, so that motion is communicated but in one way.
N represents the sea-t. The operation ot' my machine is as follows: The seed is placed iny the hopper, fromwhence it is regularly delivered by the action ofthe reciprocating slide. .As thc seed falls to the ground, Athe earth is pulverize'd by thrown upon it.
When it is desired to stop the delivery of the seed,
'the lever L is drawn aside i'ar enough to relieve the slide J from contact with thewhecl K. When itis desired to raise the roller E, the 'lever G is operated.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The machine described, consisting of the axle A with wheels a a; pole B, frame. C C, c c c, hinged beams D, toothed roller E, rod F, lifting-lever G, hopyper I, spring-slide J, indented wheel K, adj uSting-le`` ver L, belt M', and guides man., when combined as described, for the purpose set forth.
This speoilieation signed and witnessed, this 18thA day of October, 1869.-
A. D, GRAY.
