MPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
tslwt @time 0.7M. POND, OF- INDEPENDENCE, IOWA.
Letters Patent No. 91,16l, dated .fuite 8', 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CQMBINED SEEDER AND CULTIVATQR.
The` Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
-To all whom it may] concern.-
Be it known that I, O. M. POND, of Independence,
\ in the county of Buchanan, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cornbined Seeders and Oultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Fignre l represents a side elevation with one wheel removed.
Figure 2, a rear view, and
Figure 3, an inverted view of the seed-box.
Similar letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of an agitator-bar, constructed as hereinafter described, and operated by means ofau Leccentric attached to the wheel. t
It also consists in the peculiar manner of constructl ing the bottom of seed-box, so as to regulate the flow of seed; and
It also consists in manner of securing the cultivators, as and for the purpose hereinafter specihed.
x To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appert-ains, to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawingsl A represents the axle-tree, and
O- is the seed-box, sepured yto the frame in front of the axle.
The centre of the bottom of seed-box is made open, and is provided with the metal strips b b b', the strip Y li being stationary, while the strip b is made adj ustable by meansof the clamp-screws al al.
The strip b slides on to the bottom of the seed-box, and is attached thereto by the plates a? a2, one end being pivoted to the plate, and the other end pivoted to the bottom of the seed-box, as seen in fig. 3.
,c represents an angular-shaped piece of metal, which is pivoted-at its vertex to the seed-box, and the other end to the sliding strip b.
The other end is formed with a slot, which works into the lower end of the lever d, which is pivotedo the` rear side of the seed-box.
By operating this lever the strip b is placed at vany desireddistance from the strip b,thereby regulating "of the bottom of the seed-box is made achte angle with the saine, and is divided qual parts by a partition.
D represents the agitator-bar, provided with teeth a3 a3.
b3 b3 are triangular bars, placed over the agitatorbar.
The agitator-bar is provided at one end outside the seed-box with the pin e, working in connection Iwith tbc slotted lever c.
This lever is pivoted to the end of the seed-box, and is provided with projections formed with rollers e2 e2, which operate upon the eccentric f, made as seen in fig. 2, and secured to the inner surface of the wheel, B, so that by the revolution of the wheel the agitatoroar will have a lateral motion g g represent two beams attached to the frame.
Through the ends of these beams is passed the rofl or bar g', by which the cultivator-bars h h h are piv-` oted.
The outer ends of the cultivator-bars are slotted, into which are pivoted the cultivator-teeth h h h', made as seen in figs. 1 and 2. I
'i represents a bar, hinged to the axle-tree, and resting upon the upper surface of the cultivator-bars.
t" is a hinged bar, resting against the lower surface of the cultivator-bars, and is provided with the chain j, which connects with the hand-lever lo, made as seen in fig. 2, and pivoted at its vertex to the slotted end of the tongue H.
The lever k enters the slot formed in the seat-brace K', and is used for raising or lowering the cultivatorteeth.
On the seat-brace K is attached the spring m to hold the lever in place when the cultivators are raised.
M M represent the seed-box or hopper covers, and n, a rod, attached under the seed-box for the purpose of distributing the grain.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A seeder and cultivator, consisting of seed-box C, plates b b', screws a a, plates a a' levers d and k, chain j, cultivators h h h', and bars i i', all combined, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I alix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
O. M. POND.
