Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES ANDERSON United-States, and a.
Case, a citizen of the resident of the borough of Manhattan, in' the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Twyers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a twyer for fur naces by means of which su erheated steam or a mixture of superheated steam and air or a mixture of oil, super-heated steam and air may be supplied to a furnace or other apparatus for" desulfurizing ores, and for other purposes. i

The furnace shown and described with this specification is claimed in an accompanying application filed herewith.
The drawings show a charging hopper 21, 22 at the lower end thereof, and below which is located the inclosed water jacketed furnace 23. The furnace is provided with the head 24.- having openings 25 thatlead to fume piping 26, and the opening 27 forthe hopper 20. The furnace-has fitted thereto the water jacketed twyer supports 30. \Vater piping 31 leads into the latter and water outlet piping 32 extends from the furnace, while pipe connections '33 connect the water jackets of said supports with the water jackets of the furnace.
Each water jacketed twyer support has a circular threaded opening 35 at one side and conduits 36 connect the upper and lower portions at the opposite side thereof, and which constitute water protecting bars to prevent the ore entering the twyer.
The lower end of the furnace 23 is supported on a frame 40, which has connected up therewith-the inclined discharging chutes 41 and the adjustable swinging chutes 42. The latter are inclined to different positions by means of the screw rods 43. Framing 46 supports the frame and also the cooling hopper 47. Discharging drums 48 are journaled in the cooling hopper and a conveyer 49 is located at the bottom thereof.
In each threaded opei ing 35 of the twyer supports is secured the outer barrel 55 of the twy'er, which at its outer end carries the ring 56. The latter has formed therewith the threaded ends 57, 58 of the same internal diameter and an inwardly extending flange 59. ,An inner annular port (30 is formed with said ring. The engagement of the barrel 55 and ring 56 is made secure by the engagement of the threaded end 57 with a corresponding" thread on the said barrel.
Steam,inlet piping with the valve 66 is connected with the said annular port 60 at the upper end thereof. and drain piping 67 with the valve 68 is connected with the lower end of said port. Drain piping 69 extends from the lower end of the outer barrel and is connected with the valve 68 by means of the piping 70. The space between the barrel 55 and chamber to be described, constitutes the annular super-heating chamber 71.
A combustion chamber 75 within the barrel 55 has one end supported on the flange :79. An igniting barrel 76 with the tapering sh eve 77 of fire clay and the like is supported in the threaded end 58 of the ring 56. funnel cap 80 is connected to the outerend of the sleeve 7 6, and has cxtending from the lower portion thereof the bracket 81. The latter supports a fuel chamber 82, threaded on its outlet end forthe adjustable damper 83, that can be located on different portions of the outer surface of said fuel chamber 82. to control the volume of air the funnel cap 80. Fuel gas inlet pi ing 84 with'the valve 85 is connected to tie fuel chamber 82. A burner 88 with the chambers 89 and 90 has connected thereto the needle valve 91 having handle 92. An outer nozzle 93 extends from the chamber 89 and a concentric inner nozzle 94 extends fromthe chamber 90. The said nozzles both extend into the fuel chamber 82. Steam piping 95 with the valve 96 connects drawn into with said chamher .89, and oil piping 97 withthe valve 98 and from thence enters the twyerf At thesame time steam in the piping 95 enters the outer nozzle 93, mixes with the fuel gas in the chamber 82 on its way to the twyer. Oil is also forced to the twyer by means of the piping 97, the port of the needle valve 91, and the inner nozzle 94. The whole charge is mixed in the sleeve 7 7 inthe igniting barrel 76 from which it enters the combustion chamber 7 5. In a twyer the combination of a combustion chamber and a steam superheating chamber connected therewith.
2. In a twyer the combination of a combustion chamber, a steam super-heating chamber connected therewith, means to supply fuel to the combustion chamber and means to supply steam to the super-heating chamber.
3. In a twyer the combination of a combustion chamber, an annular steam superheating chamber connected therewith, means to supply steam to said super-heating chamber, means to drain the super-heating chamber, means to su ply fuel to the combustion chamber," and a ustable' means to control {1): air supply to the said combustion chamr. I 4. In a twyer thecombination of a combustion chamber, a super-heating chamber connected therewith which derives its heat from-said combustion chamber, a fuel chalnher for said combustion chamber, an ad'ustable damper to regulate the volume 0 air for said combustion chamber carried on the fuel chamber, a burner for the fuel chamher, an oil chamber and a steam chamber in the burner, oil piping connected with the said oil chamber, steam piping connected.
