APPARATUS FOR FIRING FURNACES WITH POWDERED FUEL.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns JOHN CANTLEY BRAND, subject of the'King of Great Britain and Ireland, residin at Garden Island, Sydney, New South Wa es, Australia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Firing Furnaces with Powdered Fuel, of which the following is a-specificatiqn.
This invention relates to an improved burner to facilitate complete combustion of powdered fuel in boilers, and constitutes a division of m former application Serial No. 281,189, filed arch 7, 1919.

vents 9 are formed tangentially as shown in Fig. 2 for the purpose of applying whirling motion to the air passing from the chamber 3 through them into the collar space 10 surrounding annular mouth 12 of the nozzle. The nozzle is withdrawable without disturbingits relation to the conical collar 8 when the fire doors 1 are opened. To facilitate its withdrawal, the nozzle is mounted slip joint 18.

Initial combustion takes place in this box which becomes incandescent and the flaming gases therefrom pass through the checker vents into the furnace flue 15 and thence through the tube system of the boiler passin out as usual through the smoke box 17 to t e up-take (not shown).

A burner for the purpose described comprising a fuel supply pipe, a water jack-' eted flaringnozzle detachably connected to said pipe, a collar surrounding said nozzle, an air last box inclosing said collar, said collar being spaced from said nozzle and having apertures therein leading from the air blast box to the interior of the collar, an open-work fire brick hot box in alinement with said nozzle, and means in the nozzle supply pipe and in the collar surrounding said nozzle to produce whirling motion in the fuel supply and in the collar air supply, respectivel v In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
