To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT J. GASSAN, a resident of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collar Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to fasteners and the object of the invention is to provide a fastener primarily intended for connecting the ends of a horse collar, which is simple in construction, which obviates the necessity of the ordinary loop and hasp and which may be operated with the slightest amount of physical exertion.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having all of its mechanism concealed and providing only an operating button which can be easily pressed to disconnect the ends of the collar. lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the ends of the collar connected. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the ends of the collar. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the opposite end of the collar. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the operating mechanism illustrated in Fig. 3.

In the accompanying drawings the numerals 1 and 2 designate the sides of an ordinary horse collar. These sides have their ends reinforced with casings of suitable metal as designated by the numeral 3. One of these metallic casings positioned upon the end 2 has its face provided with an outwardly extending hook member 4:. This hook member at is provided with an offset lip as clearly illustrated in the figures of the drawing and the said face is further provided upon each side of the said hook t with a pair of substantially rectangular openings 5. The metal provided by the face is formed with a pair of projecting members 6, which both extend in the same direction and partly inclose the opening 5. These memhere 6 are of a lesser diameter than the slots 5 and the said members are adapted for a purpose hereinafter to be more fully set forth. The face of this member of the collar adjacent one of the projecting tongues is provided with an opening 7 the purpose of which will be hereinafter set forth. The opposite face of the meeting end of the collar designated by the numeral 8 is provided with a pair of spaced openings 9 and 10, each arranged adjacent the sides of the collar and the face 8 is further provided with a substantially T-shaped opening or recess 11 which communicates with the opening 9. The openings 9 and 10 are each substantially rectangular in formation and are both adapted for the reception of a sliding element 12, which will hereinafter be more fully described. The face 8 has a stud 13, which when the ends of the collar are connected is adapted to engage within the opening 7 upon the opposite end of the said collar. The sliding member 12 is provided with a central opening 1 1 and is further provided with a pair of upwardly extending ears 15 having central slots 16. These slots 16 of the cars 15 are adapted to engage the projection or tongue 6 of the opposite face of the collar when the members are to be connected.

The central opening 14: of the member 12 is adapted to engage with the tongue of the projecting member. The sliding member 12 is further provided upon one of its ends with a pressure spring 18 and upon its opposite end with a thumb button 19, whereby the said member 12 may he slid so as to disconnect the tongues 6, the member 4 and the stud 13 from engagement with the members upon the opposite face of the collar.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be noted that I have provided an extremely simple and effective device for the purpose intended, and while I haveillustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement as it now appears to me, minor details of construction, within the scope of the following claims may be resorted to if desired.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. A connection for horse collars comprising a pair of members, one of said me1nbers being fitted upon one of the ends of the collar, said member having its face provided with a pair of rectangular openings and being further provided with tongues projecting within the openings, the member being also provided with an offset projecting element, the said member having an opening adjacent one of its tongues, the opposite member being provided with alining rectangular slots, the portion between the slots being provided with a T-shaped groove communicating with one of the slots, a sliding member positioned below the slots, said sliding member having its central portion pro vided with a rectangular groove, the sliding member being further provided withprojecting members having openings and adapted to be received by the tongues of the first member, a pressure spring for the sliding member, a head for the sliding member and a projection upon the face of the opposite member adapted to engage the opening within the opposite face.

2. A fastener for the ends of horse collars comprising metal casings engaging the meeting ends of the collar, said casings each provided with flattened plates, one of said plates having substantially rectangular openings, one of the walls provided by each of the said openings having a projecting member, an outwardly extending hook positioned intermediate of the said openings, the plate upon the opposite end of the collar being also provided with a pair of rectangular openings, the space between the openings being provided with a T-shaped slot adapted for the reception of the hook member upon the opposite plate, and a sliding member having a central opening and a pair of spaced offset ears provided with slots,the slots of the ears adapted to engage the projections provided within the rectangular openings of the first plate, and the central opening of the sliding member adapted to engage the central hook member of the first named plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
