` LezersPawmNo. 97,701, dated December 7,1869.
l p IMPRQVEMENT 1N- KNIr'I-:i-SHARPENERS;
Be it known-nim; we, Z.. o. nements and H. A.
\ ROBBINS, of Washington, in the District of Columbia,
have invented a new and improved Knife-Sharpener; and we 'do hcrebydeclare that the following is a-full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a portion of this specification,
. y Figure 1 being atop view, i l Figure 2, a side view, and Figure 3', a bottom View of said Sharpener, whilst .Figures 4, 5,and 6, areviews of modified forms of the saine.' .l r Thensharpening portions of our improved knif'e Sharpener -consist of two highly-temperedv annularlygrooved rollers, b b, pivoted within the peculiarlyshaped body a c c c c of said Sharpener, in such positions that the sharp ridges between the grooves of one of said rollers, 'will pass' a short'distancejwithin the spaces between the sharp ridges of the other roller, as; shown in fig; 14 ofthe accompanying drawings. `Instead of making the said sharpening rollers b b of the cylindrical shape shown -by rigs. 1 and 2 of 'the' r drawiugs.we may/sometimes make them ofthe hanV rel-shape, represented by igsA and 5, or of tlie tapering shape shown byg. (i.l l Y 4 vAnd we also propose to sometimes add to the sharpr ening properties ot' the counteracting ridges ofthe grooved rollers, by filling the annular grooves in said `rollers with a comppsition of emery or corundum.
The .body ofour improved knife-sliarpener is clearly` shown by `iigs. 2, 3, and 4, of the accompanying draw `Fairs of ears,'c c, rise from opposite sides `of the basca of said body, which ears serve as pivot-bearings C The l'grooves d d, formed inl opposite sides Vof the l become necessary.
`hase a of the said body of ourlimproved knii'eslial-pener, areso proportioned that they will receive the tines of any and all two-pronged carving-forks, as repshape, and also such a shape as enables it to be readily andsecurely placed upon the tines of a carving-fork l andwhen so placed, the saidsharpner will be in the best possible positionfor using the same, whilst 'the A fork will form the very best possible handle for holding the shapenerwhilst it is being` used by the carrer.
And when the carver has sharpened his knife, he can readily withdraw the Sharpener from the fork and place it beside the dish to be used` again whenever it may What we claim as our 4 y y y invention, anddesire to sc eure by Letters Patent, ips--4 v The four-eared and laterally-grooved body a c c c c of our improved knife .sliarpener, -when the shape thereof is such as-will enable it `tobe placed ina work- -ing position upon the tiues of `a fork, substantially as herein set forth.- i j Also, the combination Aof the annularlyf'grooved rollers b b with each other and with the peculiarlyshaped-bodya c c c c of our improved knife-Sharpener,
`substantially as herein set forth.
Also, the combination of emery or corunduni with the liigl-lytemperedmetallic ridges of knifefsharpe'n- '.ers, substantiallyin the manner herein set forth,"by
which the said gritty substance will act'conjoiutly wit-h the said metallic ridges in the reduction of knives, 85e., to sharp-cutting edges.
