JOSEPH A. TRAMBLEY, OF MAXBASS, NORTH DAKOTA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed February 14, 1910. Serial No. 543,811.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. TRAMBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maxbass, in the county of Bottineau and State of` North Dakota, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Wrench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved wrench and, to this end, it consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and denedin the claim.
The improved wrench is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, showing the improved wrench; and Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same.
The numeral 1 indicates a pair of laterally spaced side bars, connected at their front ends, by a pair of laterally spaced bars 2, and connected at their rear ends by a bar 3. The side bars 1, front end bars 2, and rear end bar 3 constitute a rectangular frame. Both ends of the rear end bar 3 project be yond the outside of the side bars 1 and one of the projecting ends thereof terminates in a hammer head 4: and the other projecting end thereof terminates in a claw 5.
Coperating jaws 6 are mounted between the front end bars 2 and are connected thereto for opening and closing movement by means of oblique slots 7 formed in the aws 6 and pins 8 seated in the front end bars 2 and projecting through the slots 7 in the jaws 6. At their inner surfaces, the jaws 6 are provided with toothed concaves 9 which are adapted to securely hold a pipe or bolt. The jaws 6 are moved in their opening and closing movements by means of an operating stem 10 pivotally connected at one of its ends to the rear ends of the jaws 6. At its intermediate portion, the operating stem 10 is provided with screw threads 11 for threaded engagement with the internal threads of an internally and externally threaded operating nut 12. The external threads of the nut 12 have threaded engagement with threads 1a formed on the inner surface of the side bars 1. At its rear end, the operating stem 10 is seated in an endwise movable head block 13 and is secured thereto by a pin 13a. Suitable guide strips 111 are secured, one to each side of the head block 13, and bear against the side bars 1 for guiding the head block 13 in its endwise movements. The ends of the guide strips 14 project beyond the outer edge of the side bars 1 and one of the projecting ends of each guide strip 14; terminates in a claw 15 for cooperation with the claw 5 and the claws 5 and 15 serve as a nail puller. By rotating the nut 12, the head block 13 may be moved toward or from the rear end bar 3, to vary the opening between the claws 5 and 15, and under the same movement of the nut 12, the rear end bar 3 and head block 13 cooperate one with the other to form a vise or wrench.
Thread cutting dies 1G are formed in the side bars 1 and the head block 13. One half of each die 1G is formed in the side bars 1 and the other half thereof is formed in the head block 13, and by slightly moving the head block 13 in respect to the side bars 1, the size of the dies 16 may be varied so as to cut threads of different diameters.
The wrench described will be found serviceable for a great many dierent purposes. The internally and externally thread operating nut 12 causes the jaws 6 to operate very quickly.
The wrench is of but small cost and is strong.
What I claim is:
In a wrench of the kind described, the combination with a rectangular frame, of an operating stem having secured at one end a sliding block head mounted in said frame and having pivotally secured at its other end a pair of cooperating jaws mounted for opening and closing movements in said frame, and a nut having external threaded engagement with said frame and having internal threaded engagement with said operating stem, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH A. TRAh/IBLEY.
