Description

N.PETER5. PHOTO-LITHOGRANER, WASHINGTON. D
JOHN SHLLY, OF ST. LOUIS,
MISSOURI, ASSIGYNOR TO JOHN J. GRIMSLEY, OE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No.`97,236, dated No'oember 23, 1869.
IMPROVED SIDE-SADDLEl TREE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it finely concern Be it known that I, JOHN SHELLY, of the city and.
county of St. Louis, Stateof Missouri, have invented :t new and useful improved Side-Saddle Tree, of which the following is e full, clear, and exa-ct description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making :t part of this specication, in which- Y Figure 1 represents a. top view of my tree.'
Figure 2 represents e longitudinal section of seme.
Similar letters indicate like parts.
,y The object of my invention is to simplify and cheapen the manufacture of side-saddles, and alsorender them easier for both rider and horse, by it change in the construction of the tree. I
. The tree A, iig. 1, hns upon it four projections, a e', b b', iig. 1, a' b', fig. 2, two on each side-ber o c', the latterbeing mede otherwise in the ordinary manner, es seen. L
The seat B, figs. l und 2, is made separate and dis- *tinct from the tree, and, resting on the supports a a',
b b', is securely fastened to the tree by screws el d', `figs. 1 and 2, o1' other suitable device...
The large-horn h may', as shown, be mede separate from the sent and screwed on to it, or it may form n pan-t of the seat, as in practicemzty be deemed best.
The smell horn -L may also either form part of the side-bnl or be seperate from it. :Ls l'. do not desire to limit myself ns to the manner of constructing these details.
lVhen the snddle is to be mede, the tree yand. seat are covered seperately, which, of course, much simplifies and quickens the operation, and requires a. less skilful workman than if they were covered together. Then they are simply screwed together, and the saddle is complete.
Not s0 much padding will he required in the seat, for, by reason of the supports a ct, b b', it will have considerable sp1-ing, end, indeed, n very comfortable saddle may he formed by a. simple covering of skin stretched over the seat.
By this mode of covering, t space, o,\is left between the'side-bars and the seat for the circulation of the nix-,thus rendering the saddle much cooler and less liable to cause gztlling of the horse.
Whztt I claim as `my invention, and desire to securey by Letters Patent is `As a new article of manufacture, a. side-saddle tree, haring the side-bers and seat made seperate and then united, substantinllyas :md for the purpose shown and specified.
