Description

J. V.l REARDON, OF ELKTON, MARYLAND. Letters Patent No. 88,210, dated March 23, 1869; antedeted-Ma/rch 11,'1869.
To all whom 'it 'nia/y concern:
yThe nature of my invention consists 'in the construc` tion of a simple yet effective bridle, in which I dispense with the usual head-stall and throat-latch, controlling thehorse by pressure on the nerves of the neck.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention -appertains to make and use' the same,
I will now proceed to describe its construction and op-' eration, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l shows the bridle attached to a horses head; and
Figure 2 isa perspective of the bit.
A represents the bit, which is made in any of the known and usual ways, and provided with a pulley at each end, as shown in fig. 2.
A strap, a, passes through each pulley, at the end of the bit.
These straps a a are provided with a ring, b, each, to prevent them from passing out of their respective pulleys, and to these rings the driving-lines, c o, are buckled.
The straps a a pass upward, and are connected with another strap, d, which latter passes over the neck of `the horse, resting on the nerves in the same, which control the movement of the horses neck and head.
From the points where the straps a a and d conrect, the former pass on' toward the rear, ending each at a suitable distance, with a ring, e, and from this ring a small strap, f, connects with the centre of the strap d.
The check-strap, h, is also buckled to the rings e e.
The straps a a. and d, and the check-strap h, are all put together, so as to fit exactly the horse on which the bridle is to be used.
It Will be seen that, by this arrangement, the horses head is left entirely free, and, by the motion of the driving-lines, the bit operates on the lower jaw and the straps on the nerves of the neck, giving the driver full and easy control over the animal.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
lhe straps a a and straps d, connecting the ling on the neck, straps j-and rings e, with the check-lines h, lines c c, and bit A, all arranged as herein described, and dispensing with the head-stall, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of August, 1868.
