[Be it known that I, CHARLES M. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at and State of Improvements in and Relating to Razor- Blade Holders,` of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesv to a razor blade holder adapted to rigidly support or hold a razor blade with its sharp or shaving edge exposed.
the aecompanying'drawings, shown and described one form-of-razor bladeholder embodying my invention.
Figure 1 1s a plan view of a holder, embodylng my invention, a razorblade, shown in dotted lines,2being supported thereby. Fig. 2gis a side elevation of the holder. Fig.
3 1s a perspective view of. the clamping position ready to clamp a razormembers 1n blade. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the holder on the line L -4,- of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are plan.A views of the opposite sidesof the holder. Figs. 7 and 8 are transverse sectional views on the lines 7 ,-'7 and 8-8, respectively, of Fig. l.
In the drawings, l `indicates a Vhandle which is preferably formed from wood. 2 indicates a,shank mounted in the han- The shank 2 is preferably crimped longitudinally or provided with a rib on one side, as shown at 2"l to strengthen it.
3 indicates clamping devices for detach# ably securing between them a razor blade with its shaving edge exposed. The clamping devices. 3 preferably comprise a base clamp 3"1L and a resilient clamp plate 3b pivotally mounted thereon. The shank 2 and c base 3a arepreferably formed integrally, the
latter being somewhat enlarged relative to the shank to engage a relatively large porpln is enlarged and is preferably countersunk in the clamp device in order'that its outer surface may be lush.- The end ofV the lplate 3b opposite to its pivoted end is re' duced to approximately the` sizeof the folded-over edge,
Patented July 26', 1910.
4 indicates a4 lock member, preferably comprising Va ring, surrounding the shank` and movable longitudinally thereon to 'engage the arm 3 of the plate 3". The upper.
surface of the arm 3 is preferably inclined downwardly towardV its free end, whereby for interlocking Ait in the clamp. These means 5 `preferably comprise projections 5av carried byone ofthe clamp, devices, for instance,*the base clamp 3a, and aper- 4tures ibrformed in the other clamp device,
the resilient plate 3", to receive the projections 53. These blade-interlocking evices 5 are adapted to grip blades` of the type which are'formed. with spaced openings that assist in securing them ina safety razor. The devices .5 are' properly spaced to register with such openings in the blade to permit the opposite faces or sides of the blade to be clamped by the opposite inner faces of the clamping devices 3. '-6 indicate, separate means for interlockin a razor blade which is provided with a a strengthening plate, or
. it may operate as a wedgeto press the 'Y For the purpose of illustration, I have, in
otherwise enlarged along that edge opposite` to its shaving edge. These means preferably comprise a pair of alined grooves 6, 6a, formed in the clamping surfaces of the clampingdevices 3. These grooves ba extend substantially from end to end of the clamp devices 3 and receive the-enlarged'or strengthened longitudinal edge of the blade.
As the clamp plate 3b is formed from'resilient metal, it will be understood that it is' normally inclined or elevatedv above the interlocking means, when released b the lock member 4,*as shown inl Fig. 3. `ly hen in dts elevated position, the plate 3b is free tot,
swing on its in Fig. 2. 1
In the "operation of clamping a' razor blade I'between the clamping devices 3the lock member` 4 is moved toward the handle lto release the plate 3b. The latter is then swung on its pivot into open position. A
pivot into the position shown razor blade may now be positioned on the base clamp 3a and in engagement with the interlocking means5 0r6 which coperate with the construction of blade to be clamped. `The plate 3" is then returned to its former position and pressed down against the blade, after which the lock-member 4 is moved into engagement with the arm 3, thus firmly clamping the base clamp 3a and plate 3b in engagement, with or against the holder.
-It will be understood that my invention is primarily int-ended to detachably 'hold a thin or leaf-like razor blade with its shaving edge exposed whereby the latter may be stropped or sharpened, but it also may be used as a holder for the blade when sbaving therewith.
To those skilled in the art of making devices ofthe class described, many alterations Yin construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my invention will suggest themselves, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. My disclosures and the description herein are purelyv illustrative, and are not intended to be vin any sense limiting.
' It will ,be noted that the blade clamping devices of the'holder are so shaped and 'ar-v ranged that when any ofthe diiierent blades whichthe'y are adapted to accommodate and hold is in stropping position, but one shaving edge is exposed. Iam aware of the fact that numerous holders for razor blades have been devised, more particularly for double shaving edge razor blades, which holders allow both shaving edges to be exnected together at their front ends, and each longitudinally recessed on its inner face, onel of said clamping elements carrying a plurality of inwardly turned pins arranged outside of the recess in it, andthe other of said clamping members having a plurality of apertures each arranged to register with one of said pins on the other clamping member, respectively, one of said clamping elements having a rearextension for connection with a suitable handle,- and the other of said clamping elements having a corres onding rearward extension, and means for inding said extensions together.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLESv M. CRANE.
