To all whom it may concern.:

Be it known that I, WTILLIAM G. SHEAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.

My invention relates to improvements in convertible chairs and more particularly to such chairs as are used by photographers. and its object is to provide a single piece of furniture which will combine all the desirable forms used by a photographer and thus avoid the expense and inconvenience of using' several detached pieces of furniture, and to provide the device with various new and useful features, as hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 shows the device fully extended to form a. settee; Fig. 2 the same closed to form an arm chair; Fig. 3 an end elevation of the device as shown in Fig. l; Fig. 4 an end elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a vertical section of the lower part of the device showing one side extended and the other side closed; Fig. 6 a sectional plan of one end of the device on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 a vertical section through the center of one of the rear legs, showing details of construction; and, Fig. 8 a perspective view of a portion of the frame showing details of construction.

Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.

The device consists essentially of a frame 1 having legs 2 and 3, a seat 4, and a back 5. Bars 6' and 7 are pivotally connected at one end to the upper ends of the legs 2 and 3 and at the other end to legs S and 9. These legs 8 and 9 are provided with extension slides 10 which slide in dovetail grooves 11 in the legs, and carry the vertically adjustable arms 10a.

Small upholstered cushions 12 are pivoted to the seat Ll, and when adjusted to vertical position as in Fig. 2, form side cushions for the chair, and when horizontal as in 1, they rest upon the bars 6 and 7 and form extensions of the seat 4. These cushions 12 being supported by the bars 6 and 7, are shifted by the movement of the same.

It will be noted that the pivots of the cushions 12 are above and toward the center of the chair from the pivots of the bars 6 and 7. The object is to allow the outer edges of the cushions 12 when raised to come flush with the underside of the arms 10, and when lowered to be close to the seat 4L at one edge and permit the arm 10a to be lowered and rest upon the bars 6 and 7, the cushion 12 being slidable on the bars 6 and 7 to accomplish this result.

The back 5 of the chair is provided with hinged extensions 13 which fold behind the said back when the device is used as a chair as shown in Fig. 2. The back 5, together with the extensions 13, may be raised as in Fig. 2, or entirely removed making a bench of the device. The back 5 is secured to the chair by hooks 14 on the same adapted to fit within recesses 15 in the legsl 3 and engages pins 16 in these recesses.

To hold the legs 8 and 9, the bars 6 and 7, and the cushions in raised or folded position, brace bars 17 are attached to the legs S and 9, and on the inner side of these brace bars are latches or hooks 18 which engage detents 19 on the underside of the cushion 12. This holds all movable parts securely in place. The lower ends of the legs 9 engage stops 2O and the upper ends engage the cushions 12. The brace bars 17 are provided at both ends with overlapping projections which engage the bars 6 and 7 when in the folded position and act as stops.

The slides 10 are held in adjusted position at any desired height by any convenient form of catch 22, and a hook 21 is used to engage a detent on the bars 7 to secure the back extensions 13 to the said bars.

It will be obvious from the foregoing description that this device may be adjusted in a variety of forms and positions, and is well adapted for use by a photographer and for various other purposes.

What I claim is 1. A convertible chair, comprising a main frame, bars each pivoted at one end to the said frame, a leg pivoted to the other end of each bar, a seat on the frame, and side cushions pivoted to the respective sides of the seat and supported by the bars.

2. A convertible chair, comprising a frame, a back having side extensions hinged thereto, bars each pivoted at one end to the frame, a leg pivoted to the other end of each bar, a seat, side cushions pivoted to the respec- JLive sides 0f the seat. and supported by the bars, slides carried by the legs, and arms supported by the slides.

3. A convertible chair, comprising a frame, a bacl; adjustable on the frame and detachable therefrom, bars each pivoted to the frame at one end, a leg pivoted to the other end of each bar, slides movable in dove-tail Ways in the legs, arms supported by the slides, a seat on the frame, side cushions pivoted to the respective sides of the seat and slidably supported by the bars.

4. Aconvertible chair, comprising a frame,

a seat on the frame, bars eac-b pivoted to the frame at one end, a leg pivoted to each of the bars, brace bars connecting the legs in pairs, a seat on the frame, side cushions pivoted to the respective sides of the seat and slidably supported by the bars, detents on the side cushions, hooks on the brace bars engaging the detents, stops on the frame engaging the legs, and arms supported by the legs.
