JOSEPH R. SMITH, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. ASSIGNOR TO CORNELIUS WALSH. OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 95,944, dated October 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVELLING-BAGS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Toall whom it may comer-n:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH It. SMITH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Travelling, Bags, and that the following is a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description to enable one skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to carry it into effect, reference being bad to the accompanying draw-' and open.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of one corner of'the bag.
The ends a of the band A of the frame are bent around the lower corners, so as to obviate the liability of the band to be knocked off at this place, and are connected by a strip of metal, B, which in the manufacture of the bag, passes inside the bottom, which is riveted thereto, being thereby adapted to be made in one piece, and the separate covering of its support obviated, and which is made of thicker metal than the body of the frame, as represented, so as to afford the necessary rigidity of support for the ends of the frame.
The cruise of the side or jaw O of the frame, to
. which the band is attached, are preferably bent at. right angles, and extend across the band, where they have one side of the hinges formed in them by notching and bending, crin other suitable manner, the other half of the hinge being formed in the ends of the side D, which forms the other jaw of the frame, and the two parts united by the customary pintles E, which.
may be in the form of rivets, as shown.
The frame, constructed as above described, adapts corner-shields, or protectors F, to be readily applied. These are preferably made by casting, in the form shown, and are applied after the frame is covered, and riveted through the leather or cloth and theband at the bottom and ends, as shown in fig. 3.
Any suitable fastening, or fastenings G H, may be applied to the bag, in the usual or any suitable manour.
The several parts of the frame may be united by rivets, as shown, or otherwise, and be made of any suitable material.
a By obviating the necessity of a scam in the bottom of the bag, and of the covering of the support of the bottom, as above explained, great saving in material 7 and time, and consequently in the cost of the manu' vfacture of the bag, is secured, while at the same time a much more neat, strong, and durable article is pro duced.
The frame, further, separately is adapted by my improvement to be much more expeditiously and cheaply manufactured, and is stronger, smoother, and lighter in proportion than the old form.
Havingthns fully described my invention,
I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The band A, having its ends a a bent around the hinge-corners of the frame, and connected by a sepa rate strip or brace, B, of greater strength or stiffness, substantially as represented and described, for the purposes set forth.
2. The band A, having its ends a a bent around the binge-corners of the frame, andunited by a separate stiff strip or brace, B, in combination with the cornershields or protectors I, applied externally of the cover, as represented and described, for the purpose set forth.
. JOSEPH B. SMITH.
