Description
3-. W. BUCK. MATGH BOX. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 14. 1909.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. BOCK, 0F MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
MATCH-B OX.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. Boox, a citizen of the United States, residing atMilwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in match boxes; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings.
The Invention consists in the structure substantially as shown bent up and out from a suitable blank with the downturned scratching-surface receiving portion.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved match box, showing a box of matches therein. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a blank of which my match box is formed.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a blank of which my improved match box is formed. The blank is stamped from a single piece of metal and is composed of a back 2 having at its upper end the curved extension 3 provided with an opening 4; whereby the box may be hung upon a nail or hook. By having the extension above the back 2 it will be seen that the box can be placed upon or removed from the hook or nail when a box of matches is in the same, thus allowing for the placing of a box of matches therein. The sides of the box are indicated by 5 and 6 and are formed integral with the back as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The upper ends of the sides 5 and 6 are provided with inwardly turned flanges 7 and 8 which form the front wall of the box. These flanges 7 and 8 are of such a width that they do not close the entire front of the box, but leave a vertical slot 9 extending from the upper to the lower end of the box and through which the matches may be readily seen. This slot 9 also serves as means whereby the matches may be straightened by inserting the fingers through the slot. The lower ends of the sides 5 and G are provided with the extensions Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 14, 1909.

Serial No. 517,600.
10 and 11 which extend in an alinement with the sides and together with the lower end of the sides form the match receiving and holding receptacle 12, for the match and from which the matches may be readily removed, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The lower end of the extensions 10 and 11 are curved as indicated at 13 to form a curlved bottom for the match holding receptac e.
The back 2 of the box is provided with an extension 14 which is bent horizontally and extends under the sides 5 and 6 of the box and out under the extensions 10 and 11 and curved to correspond with the curved ends 13 thereof. This extension, as will be seen forms the bottom of the match receiving receptacle, and is curved so as to enable the matches to be more readily removed. The
outer end of the extension, or bottom 14 is rolled at 15 to form a smooth finished out end so that there will be no rough edge to cut the fingers when removing the matches. The bottom, or extension 14 is suitably secured to the lower ends of the sides 5 and 6 and the curved edge of the extensions 10 and 11.
In order to provide a scratching surface for the matches; I cut out the lower end of the back 2 and turn the same down below the bottom 14 and which scratcher is indicated at 16. The edges of said scratcher, are turned over forming flanges 17 which engage the piece of sand-paper 18 and hold the same therein.
The matches are inserted in my improved box in the original packages, and therefore, the boxes are made of differentwidths and thicknesses. In inserting the matches, the sliding cover is removed from the original package and the box inserted in my box, with the bottom against the back 2. The matches are therefore exposed through the slot 9. The matches, by gravity, fall into the receptacle on the outside of the original package, and can be readily removed. Should the matches in the original package become disarranged, the same can be straighten'ed with the fingers through the slot 9.
What I claim is The match box substantially as described composed of a vertical back wall having a tongue out from the lower portion thereof and bent downwardly to depend from the box and provided with an exposed match bottom open-top match-receiving and holdscratching surface, vthe vertical side walls ing-receptacle. 10 having inturned Vertical front match-oretain- In testimony whereof I affiX my signature, ing flanges spaced apart, and the forwardly in presence of two witnesses.
5 and upwardly projecting bottom to which SAMUEL W. BOCK.
the side walls are secured, said side walls at WVitnesses: their lower ends having forward extensions GEO. P. BRENNER,
to cooperate with said bottom in forming the CHAS. BOOK.
