GEORGE H. DEATON, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. H
MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1911.
Application filed May 6, 1911. Serial No. 625,475.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. DEATON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a match box which is especially adapted to receive a box of matches, the cover of which is removed, and to hold the same at such an angle to a supporting wall that the matches will slide down to the delivery end of the match safe, from which end they can be readily removed.
The invention also includes a receptacle for burned matches.
A further object of the invention is to construct a match safe of the kind shown in the drawings of three pieces of material, or blanks, with the exception of alid whichis formed of a separate piece and which could of course be omitted if desired.
The invention consists in a match box constructed as hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the match boxin position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the box, the lid being lifted. Fig. 3 is a rear perspective viewillustrating the manner of holding the box in order to insert a new supply of matches.
In these drawings 1 represents a box forming a match holding compartment the top and sides of which are formedof a single piece of metal, and the top of the box is provided with an integral upwardly extending strip 2, which is bent at an obtuse angle to the said top so that when the strip 2 is placed against a wall or post the box proper will hang at the angle indicated in the drawing. The rear portion of the box sides are cut away or beveled so that their rear vertical edges 3 will be in vertical alinement with the upwardly extending strip 2. A bottom piece 4 and a front end 5 are also of=one piece and are provided with a plurality of .slots through which tongues 6 struck from the sides of the box 1 are passed,
said tongues being bent over in order to clamp the bottom 4 and front end 5 to the top and sides 1. A receptacle 7 for burned matches is formed by bending a single piece of material into an open rectangular form,
the vertical edges of which are provided with suitable tongues 8 which are passed through slots in the upwardly extending strip 2, and clenched thereon. It will be observed that the top portion of the box 15 forms the bottom of the burned match receptacle 7 and that the upwardly extending strip 2 forms the rear wall of said compartment; The top of the box 1 is providedv with a hinged section 9 which closes the lower forward end portion of the box. Adjacent the upper end of the strip 2 a roughened portion is formed which forms a scratcher. This portion is also provided with two eyes 11 so that it can be hung upon nails or pins 12. An ordinary paper match box 13 is removed from the sliding cover within which' it is carried when sold, and the said bov 13 is then slipped into the match receiving box or compartment 1 from the rear, and after my device has ben hung in position the supporting wall forms the rear wall or end of the box 1.
It will be noted that by reason of this construction it is not necessary to handle the matches or remove them from the paper box in which they are purchased in order to place them in the receptacle.
It will be further noted that by having the rear end of my match safe open the paper box 13 can be readily inserted in position.
What I claim is 1. A match box consisting of top and bottom, sides and a front end, said box beinserted in the open rear end of the device,
and a supporting member carried at the rear end of the device and at an angle of more than ninety degrees thereto, the rear end of the device being cut away upon the same angle.
8. In a device of the kind described, comprising a rectangular metal box, a hinged top lid adjacent the front end of the box, the rear end of the box being open and cut away obliquely upon a vertical line, said box being adapted to receive from the rear an original match package, and a supporting member extending upwardly from the rear end of the box and at an angle thereto, thereby causing the said box to hang downwardly and forwardly from a support, the said support forming the rear end of the box.
4. A match box consisting of an oblong, forwardly and downwardly extending compartment, an upwardly extending support carried by its rear end, an upwardly open burned match compartment arranged upon the said box, and a lid arranged in the top of the box in advance of the last mentioned compartment, the said supporting member 15 porting surface forming the back of the first 20 mentioned compartment.
