Description
" dinitd $151166 z. svCRAcRAFT, on
LACON, ILLINOIS.
Leners Pm Nv 95,666, lated october 5, 1669.
mrnzovnMENT I/N POST-Avenne'.
'liuc-Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom lit may concern:
Be it known that I, Zjs. CRACRAFT, of Lacon, in the county of Marshall, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post- Augers; 'and l. do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description there o`,.refereneey plate, divided from the -centre outward intotwo equal parts, each ofthe said parts being formed, at their iuner side, into a sexies of cutting-edges, the said edges being arranged s0 that the smooth edge of one division of the plate will be opposite to the cutting-edge of the other.
It also consists in furnishing each plate, at its circumference, with a vertical knife, all' of which will hereinaf'ter be fully 'set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my inl vention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation. In the accompanying drawing- A represents thc stem or handle of the auger, made at its lower end with a gimlet, as seen in fig. 1.
, On the handle is secured the circular metal plate B, to the upper side of which is attached a stronger piece ot' metal, a', through a hole, in the centre of which is made a female screw, to receive a male screw formed on the stem A, a little above the gimlet-point.
The plate B is divided into two equal parts from its centre outward, forming a series of cutting circ'ular edges, a a a.
'It will be-observed that these cutting-edges are so placed that the smooth edge will be opposite to the l cutting-edge in each plate. By this arrangement a perfect boring-angel' is obtained.
d d represent knives, placedv on the circumferene y of the plate B, as seen in iig. 3.
Having thus described iny invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, ise The plate B,lconstrueted as described, in combina,- tion with the stem A, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that -I claim the foregoing as my own, I aiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
Z. S. CRAGRAFT.
Witnesses: I
