Description

dilated gime Il. C. ALEXANDER, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
'Lette/rs Patent No. 99,046, dated January 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAN-OPENERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the same.
To all whom it lmay conce-rn l Be it known that I, H. C. ALEXANDER., of thc city,
county,l and State of New York, have invented a new i parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of my improved cau-opener, patented November 16, 1869, and numbered 96,761, so as to make it simpler, cheaper, and more convenient in manufacture; and
It consists in the can-opener, constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A is they handle of the canopener, which is made of cast-iron, and is cast solid in one piece.
The ends or hand-pieces of the handle A, are cast half round upon their upper sides, and are cored out upon their under sides, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, so as to secure, at the same time, the requisite size, strength, and lightness. 4
In 'the under side of the central part of the handle A, is formed acircnlar recess or cavity, into which the base of the knives or cutters B is fitted.
rlhe upper edge or base ofthe knives B is made plane, to lit into the circular`cavity of the handle A, and their lower or cutting-edges are made serrated, as shown in iig. 1.
The knives or cutters B may be made in one piece, or in sections, and are secured to the handle A by screws or rivets passing through the bases ofthe said knives, and through the sides of the central part of the said handle, as shown in iig. 2.
In using the instrument, the points of the critters B are placed upon the parts of the can or box in which the opening is to be made, and the instrument is pressed downward until `the under side of the handle A comes iii-contact with the top of the can or box.
In the case of sardine-boxes and other cans, where it is desired to leave the piece cut out fast at one side, to serve as a cover, a part or segment of' the cutters or knives may be cut out or omitted, as shown in figs. l and 2.
By thisconst-ruction, a neat, effective, and convenient can-opener is produced, which may be manufactured at small cost.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- "lhe can-opener A B, constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposeset forth. l
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 15th day of December, 1869.
H. C. ALEXANDER.
