GEORGE F. HU'ICHINGS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
MANIFOLDING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HUToH- mes, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in manifolding devices for duplicating writing on record sheets, receipt cards, &c., and the invention embraces a holder for securing the record sheets and the receipt cards in proper relation to each other preparatory to being written on, a primary clamping member which assists the holder insecuring the record sheets and the receipt cards in proper relation to each other, a secondary clamping member which assists the primary clamping member in holding the record sheets after they have been written on, and a base to which the holder and the primary clamping member are secured, and which also affords an arm-rest for the clerk who fills in the record sheets and the receipt cards.
The device is particularly adapted for use in the registry department of the postal service, as by its use considerable time can be saved in filling in receipt cards, and record sheets of the same.
The device may also be employed to ad vantage as a temporary file for holding the filled-in record sheets until a suflicient number have accumulated to warranttheir permanent filing.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section of the invention.
In constructing the device I employ a base 1, which is of sufficient length to afford an arm-rest for the clerk while filling-in the record sheets and the receipt cards. The intermediate portion of said base is provided with a holder for securing the record sheets A and the receipt cards in proper relation to each other. Said holder consists of a bottom portion 2, and marginal flanges 3 and 4, which latter is considerably lower Specification of Letters Patent.

than the former, to avoid interfering with the clerks hand when filling in the record sheets and the receipt cards. Flange 4 is cut out at its central portion 4 and a depression 5 is formed in the base beneath said cut-out portion, so that the clerk may insert his thumb beneath each record sheet preparatory to removing the same from the holder after it has been filled in.
The holder is assisted in securing the sheets and the cards in proper relation to each other by a pair of pins 6, projecting upwardly from the base. The holder is further assisted in securing the sheets and the cards in position by a primary clamping member 7 which is pivotally-mounted upon the base, it being provided with rearwardlyturned ears 8,'which are pivotally secured to a pair of cars 9, secured to the upper portion of the base. The primary clamping member 7 also acts as a file in holding the record sheets after they have been filled in, and for that purpose it is provided with marginal flanges 10, and a secondary clamp ing member 11, which latter is pivotallysecured to a pair of ears 12, projecting forwardly from a handle 13 of the primary clamping member. The lower'ends of the clamping members 7 and 11 are held down upon the sheets by'springs 14 and 15, respectively. I
In practice the holder is supplied with a number of receipt cards, record sheets, and a carbon sheet, and after a record sheet has been filled in, its upper end is left below the primary clamping member while its lower free end is turned upward and placed beneath the secondary clamping member 11, as shown in Fig. 2. Each succeeding record sheet, after being filled in, is disposed of in the same manner until a sufficient number have accumulated to warrant their being permanently filed away.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A device of the character described consisting of a base, a holder secured to the intermediate portion of said base and provided with marginal flanges for holding sheets and cards in proper relation to each other, a primary clamping member mounted on the base above said holder to assist in holding the sheets and cards, said clamping member being provided With marginal fiangesto protect the edges of the sheets when turned back upon said member, and a secondary clamping member mounted near the upper end of a primary clamping memher to assist in holding the sheets turned In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
in the presence of two Witnesses.
