UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT B. DIOKEY, OF WACO, TEXAS.
MEMORANDUM CLIP-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,842, dated January 7, 1902.
Application filed February 23, 1901. Serial No. 48,561- (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,RoBERT B.DIoKEY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan andState of Texas, have invented new'and useful Improvements in Memorandum Clip-Boards,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clip-boards especially adapted for use on telephones, desks, &c.; and its primary obj cct is to provide a device of this character having a novel arrangement of clips thereon whereby checks and other papers may be securely fastened to the device at convenient points.
A further object is to provide a board having a roll of paper secured thereto and to provide means whereby said paper may be readily torn ofi as used.
Afurther object is to provide means whereby the clip-board may be securely fastened to the box of a telephone. 7
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in providing'a board of sufficient length to form an arm-rest. To the side of this board, adjacent to the lower end thereof, is secured a clip, while asecond clip is arranged at the upper end of the board and is adapted to normally bear upon an up-j wardly-extending portion of theclip-board. A bracket is secured to the lower surface of the board and is provided with means wherebyv a rod may be clamped therein. This rod is adapted to engage the edges of the lidof the battery-box of a telephone. A frame is arranged below the board and is so constructed.
as to support said board in an inclined position when the same is placed upon a desk.
having a continuous sheet of paper wound thereon. This paper is adapted to extend upward through a slot formed within a toothed flange arranged at the side of the clip-board, adjacent to the top thereof. The sheet then extends across the face of said board and into asecond similar slot arranged at the remain after more fully described and claimed, and
illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
showing'the preferred form of myinvention,
and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in position upon a desk and showing in dotted lines the location of the lid of the telephone-box when the board is attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device attached to a telephone-box. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig.4 is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a board which is of any desired length, but which is preferably long enough to serve as a rest for the arm of the writer. A plate 2 is secured to one side of this board, at a point adjacent to the lower edge thereof, and this plate is provided with ears 3, which receive a rod 4, upon which are pivoted ears 5, extending from a clip 6, preferably formed of sheet'metal. A spring 7 is coiled upon the rod and is adapted to hold the clip normally in contact with the board. The upper portion of the board 1 is cut away at the sides thereof, as shown at 8, and to each side is secured-a strip 9, preferably formed of sheet metal, and which is provided at its upper edge with a flange 10, having teeth 11 arranged along'the outer edge thereof. A longitudinally-extending slot 12 is formed within each of these flanges and is for the purpose hereinafter more fully described. Thestrips 9 are provided at their upper ends with eyes 13,which are adapted to receive the upwardly-extending intermediate portion of a wire or red 14, the free ends 15 of whichare secured to the bottom of the board 1, adjacent to the loweredge thereof and at opposite sides. This rod is so shaped as to form a support for the lower end of the board, and a yoke comprising standards 16, formed of wire, is secured to the rod 14 at a point adjacent to the rear edge of the board 1 and serves to support said board in an inclined position. An angle-iron 17 is mounted upon the side strip 9 and extends along the upper edge of the board 1, and this iron is provided with a rearwardly-extending flange 18 at its upper edge, which is adapted to overlap the intermediate portion of the rod 14 and limit the upward movement thereof within the eyes 13.
A rod 19 extends transversely of the device, the ends thereof being mounted within the side strips 9 at points below the angle-iron 17. A wire clip 20 is mounted upon this rod and extends upward through slots 21 within the angle-iron and is adapted to normally contact with the upright portion of said iron.
A brace 22 is arranged between the rod 14 and one of the side strips 9, and parallel ears or extensions 23 are formed upon this brace and are adapted to receive the edge of the lid 24 of the battery-box of a telephone.
A bracket 25 is secured to the lower surface of the board 1 at a point adjacent to the clip 6, before referred to, and this bracketis adapted to receive a rod 26, said rod being secured therein in any suitable manner, as by means of a set-screw 27. A hook 28 is provided at one end of the rod 26 and is adapted to engage one of the edges of the cover 24. A second hook 29 is slidably mounted upon said rod and is adapted to engage the opposite edge of the cover 24, a set-screw 30 being provided whereby said arm may be locked in adjusted position upon the rod 26.
Studs 31 extend from the opposite sides of the board 1 adjacent to the inner ends of the flanges 10, and upon these studs are coiled the ends of'a bail-shaped spring-metal wire 32, which normally bears upon the board at points between the flanges 10 and is adapted to hold in position a memorandum-pad should a pad be preferred or the supply of roll-paper become exhausted.
Hangers 33 are secured to the lower surface of the board 1, and journaled therebetween is a spool or roller 34, upon which is Wound a continuous strip of paper 35. This paper is adapted to pass through one of the slots 12, before described, and over the face of the board 1 and beneath the bail-shaped clip 32, and then down through the other slot 12, said clip serving to hold the strip firmly clamped upon the board. It will be understood that desired data may be written upon this strip 35, and when it is desired to tear the same from the remainder of the strip it is merely necessary to draw said strip laterally and then tear the same upward upon the toothed edge of the adjacent flange 10.
The clip 20 may be employed for holding checks, memoranda, 850., forming the subject of the conversation over the telephone, and for other purposes, and, if desired, the clip 6 may be used for holding papers, orders, bills, and any subject-matter being received over a telephone and for various other purposes. If desired, the paper strip 35 maybe ruled in any suitable manner. By providing a carbon-' sheet duplicate copies can, as is obvious, be readily made.
It will be seen that the cars 23 and the rod 26 will hold the clip-board securely in position at the side of a telephone-box. If, however, it is desired to employ this board upon a desk, the rod 26 is removed and the rods 14 and standards 16 serve as supports for said board and will hold the same in an inclined position.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. The combination with a board having a clip thereon, of a bracket secured to said board, a hooked rod mounted within the bracket, means for locking the rod in position therein and a hooked arm adjustably secured upon the rod.
2. The combination with a board, of a frame adapted to support the same, hangers secured to the lower surface of the board and adapted to support a roll of paper orsimilar material, strips secured to the side edges of the board, a toothed flange to each strip and having a slot therein, said slots being adapted to receive the paper from the roll, studs extending laterally from the board, and a spring-clip mounted upon the studs and normally contacting with the board at points between the toothed flanges.
3. The combination with a board, of hang ers depending therefrom and adapted to support a roll of paper or similar material, strips secured to the sides of the board, toothed flanges to said strips and having slots therein adapted to receive the paper from the roll, a spring-clip between the toothed flanges and normally contacting with the board, a bracket secured to the board, a hooked rod adjustably secured within the bracket, a hooked arm adjustably mounted upon the rod, and laterally-extending ears adapted to engage the box of a telephone,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT B. DIOKEY.
