SHIRT HOLDER AND PROTECTOR.

Be it known that I, ELKAN W. GLAUBER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of M1ssouri,'have in'-. vented a new and useful Improvement in .view of said blank or sheet folded; Fig. 5 is a plan view .of a modified form of blank or sheet before it is folded; .Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a shirt holder and protector formed of the blank or sheet shown in Fig. 5 ready for use; and Fig. 7 is a side edge View of the shirt holder and protector shown in Fig. 6, showing in dotted lines the point of the pocket therein folded back upon said pocket.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in shirt holders and protectors, the object being to provide a simple, comthe over-lapping edges of flapsv 3 ma paratively inexpensive, and easily-made device of the kind described which is particu-' larly adapted for use in laundries or by shirt dealers or manufacturers in holding shirts, es ecially laundered shirts, in a neatly folded and compact manner without the use of pins, bands, or other securing means, and

protecting the same from becoming soiled by finger-prints, dust, or other particles.

With this object in view, my invention consists arrangement of the several parts of my shirt holder and protector, all as will hereinafter 1, as shown in Fig. 2, with their meeting edges over-lapping. Preferably one of the lower flaps 3 is gummed, as at 5, wherepg readily secured or fastened together, t ere-.

by providing a pocket in which one end of a folded shirt S may be inserted and held folded in place, the bottom edge of this pocket being suitably closed, if desired. The folded shirt S is preferably placed in said pocket with its front or bosom flatwise .upon the middle portion of the blank 1.

After the said shirt is thus placed in position, the flaps 4 are folded over the back of the shirt and may be fastened together by any suitable means, preferably by one or more gummed stickers or labels 6, or, if desired, the edge of one of flaps 4 may be suitably gummed, the said flaps 4 in this folded condition forming a pocket substantiallycontinuous with said first-mentioned pocket formed by said flaps 3. In order to prevent the slitted portions 2 from tearing inwardly from the line upon which said flaps 3 and 4 are folded, I provide reinforcing pieces 7 on the blank 1, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, preferably on the inner side of said blank, so as to resist and prevent any tendency of the flaps 3 and 4 to tear at this point when ashirt S is being placed in position. As the upper portion of a shirt S when folded is somewhat thickeror more bulky than the lower portion thereof which fits into said pocket formed by said flaps 3, I preferably widen the upper portion of blank 1 or taper the sides-thereof, as shown in Fig. 3, thus providing a longer or wider overlap toward the top of the holder so as to accommodate the .increased thickness or bulk of the folded shirt at that point.

My shirt-holder and protector, as thus seen, is made preferably all in one piece and is particularly well adapted for use by shirt-dealers and' manufacturers and in laundries, and by the use of my shirt holder and protector an inspection of the shirt, while the same is held in folded position in said pocket formed by said flaps 3 and before the same is sent out .to the-trade or to a customer, may be readily made without disturbing the position of the same in my said holder and protector. In laundries, for instance, after, say, a number of shirts have been laundered and properly folded. and placed, respectively, in said pocket formed by said flaps 3 of my holder and protector with the bosoms thereof preferably flatwise against the portion 1 of said blank, in order that dust and other particles may not nocumulate thereon while the shirts are in the laundry, the said holders with said. shirts may be stacked in suitable piles, the flaps 4 being unfolded and extending outwardly from the portion 1 and the bosoms of said shirts being uppermost. Should it now be desired, as is customary, to inspect said laundered shirts, the inspector may note the condition of the bosoms of said shirts directly through said portion-1 of the holder, the same being preferably transparent, and then note the condition of other parts of said shirt by merely turning the shirt over, it not being necessary for the inspector to undo or unwrap any part of my holder and the shirt being always kept folded by said pocket formed by said flaps 3. After such inspection, thefiaps 4 are now folded and overlapped across the back of the shirt and fastened together, when the shirt, thus held and protected from dust and other particles by'my holder and protector, is ready to be sent to the customer; the shirt, so held and protected, being easily handled, maintained in a neatly folded and compact condition, and protected, particularly the bosom thereof, from becoming soiled by finger-prints, marks, dust, or otherwise. Should the inspector desire to make a very close examination of the bosom of the shirt, he may fold the upper portion of the holder with said flaps 4 extended, back upon the shirt-bosom along the upper line of saidpocket formed by said flaps 8, without injuring my holder and without disturbing the folded condition of the shirt in said pocket; in this position of the upper portion of said holder, the said bosom may be veryclosely inspected, as is obvious, said upper portion with said extended flaps 4 being afterward returned to their former position and flaps 4 folded and over-lapped across the back of the shirt and fastened together, as before described.

In Figs 5, 6, and 7, I have shown a slightly modified form of my holder and protector. In this form of my holder and protector, the blank 1 is slitted, as at 2*, diagonally inwardly from its opposite side edges, whereby the pocket formed by the flaps 3 is provided with an integral extended or pointed portion 8 which serves to guide the shirt S when the same is being placed in said pocket, the lower edges of the flaps 4*, when said flaps are overlapped across the back of the shirt, meeting and being contiguous to, as is obvious, the top edges of said folded flaps 3 In this form of my holder and protector, in making a very close examination of the bosom of the shirt, the upper portion of part 1* with flaps 4 extended may be folded back upon said bosom to a somewhat greater extent, for obvious reasons, than in my said first described form of holder, the top line across the portion 1 of the pocket formed by the flaps 3*. being somewhat nearer to the bottom edge of the holder than is the top line of the pocket formed b said flaps 3, the shirt S being, however, rmly held in place and in folded condition by the pocket formed by said flaps 3 and the point 8 may also be folded back upon the back of the shirt, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.

It is obvious that any desired lettering oradvertising matter might be placed on my said holder or on said stickers or labels 6, and that my holder may be made in varying sizes, as desired; it is also obvious that minor changes in the construction and arrangement of my holder may be made without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A shirt holder and protector comprising a flexible sheet having slits inwardly from its side edges, thereby providing pairs of integral independent upper and lower side flaps, said flaps being adapted to be folded and overlapped across the back of said sheet and form substantially a continuous pocket; substantially as described.

2. A shirt holder and protector comprising a flexible sheet having slits inwardly from its side edges, thereby providing pairs of integral independent upper and lower side flaps, said flaps being adapted to be folded and overlapped across the back of said sheet and form substantially a continuous pocket, and means adapted to independently secure the edges of each of said pairs of flaps together when in said folded and overlapping position; substantially as described.

3. A shirt-holder and protector comprising a single flexible sheet having slits inwardly from its side edges, thereby providing pairs of integral independent upper and lower side flaps, said flaps being adapted to be folded and overlapped across the back of said sheet and form substantially a continuous 'pocket, reinforcing pieces on the inner side of said sheet at the inner ends of said slits, and means adapted to independentlysaid sheet and form substantially a continuous pocket, and means adapted. to secure the edges of each of said pairs of flaps together when in said folded and overlapping position; substantially as described.

As a new article of manufacture, the shirt holder and protector herein described, the same comprising asingle sheet of flexible transparent paper having slits inwardly from its side edges, thereb providing pairs of integral inde endent ower and upper side flaps, said aps being adapted to be folded and overlapped across the back of said sheet and form substantially a continuous pocket wherein'the shirt is adapted to be held in a fiat, folded condition, and means adapted to independently secure the edges of each of saidpairs of flaps together when in said folded and overlapping position substantially as described. p

6. As a new article of manufacture, the shirt holder and protector herein described, the same comprising a'single flexible sheet having a pocket at one end and a air of integral flexible side flaps, said aps being adapted to be folded and overlapped across .end, a pair of integral flexible side flaps adapted to be folded and overlapped across the back of said sheet and form substantially a continuation -of said pocket, and means adapted to secure the edges of said flaps together when'in said folded and overlapping position; substantially as described.
