ISAAC YV. HEYSINGER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-HANDLE.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,890, dated January 25, 1881. Application filed October 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC W. HEYSINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Handles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tool-handle attachment embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a top View thereof, partly sectional. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof in line a: 00, Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are side elevations of different tools having my invention attached to them.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe several figures.
My invention consists of means for attachin g tools to handles. whereby interchange able tools may be applied to the same handle, securely fixed thereto and adjusted thereon, and readily removed, as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a metallic disk, which is provided with a tang, a, for attachment to a handle, 13, said disk standing upright, and is formed with a circu lar row of studs, 1), projecting horizontally from opposite sides.
0 represents ears, one end of each of which is attached to the blade or shank of a tool, and the other end is of disk form, having a row of notches, depressions, or perforations, 0, coinciding with the studs 1), and adapted to receive said studs when the ears are applied to the disk A.
The disk portions of the ears of two tools are applied to opposite sides of the disk A, so that the tools project in opposite directions, and a screw, D, is passed centrally through said portions and the disk A, which screw, when tightened, clamps the ears and disk to each other, the parts interlocking and remaining immovable on each other, so that the tools may render good service without shifting on the handle, either tool being adapted to be used.
It will be seen that by loosening the screw D so that the studs 12 emerge from the perforations 0 the tools may be turned on said screw and adjusted to various angles, after which, the perforations and studs coinciding, the screw is tightened and the parts retain their adjusted positions, the tool then being ready for operation.
in order to render one tool applicable to the disk A and removable therefrom without removing the screw D, the ear of the former is constructed with an open slot, (1, which, extending from the circumference of the ear, communicates with the opening a, which receives the screw D.
When the tool is to be applied the screw D is loosened Without removal of said screw and the other tool. The eye of the tool is then slipped over said screw and the latter tightened, the secure fastening and adjustability of the tool being the same as hereinbefore stated. When the tool is to be removed the screw is loosened and the car may be drawn from the disk A, the open slot at passing the screw without obstruction.
When the tools are not required for service the screw D is loosened and the tools may be folded on the handle 13, after which the screw is tightened, so as to keep the tools in their folded position, or the tools may be entirely removed. The outer parts of these cars are extended tangentially from the disk portions and are recessed on their under sides. They allow the blades to fold down parallel with the handle B for convenience in transporta tion, storage, 850.
Various tools may be applied to the handle, it being necessary to provide or form them with ears, as stated, the handle thus being adapted for interchangeable tools, one, two,
or more at a time.
If desired, the studs 1) may be formed on the disk portion of the ears U and the perforations 0 in the disk A.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with handle B and disk A, rigidly secured thereto, provided with studs d, that fit int'o perforations c, the tool-ears O 0, having disks which are provided with perforations 0, arranged in circular series, these latter disks being arranged one on each side the disk A, having studs 01, substantially as of disk A, and the clamp-screw D, whereby and for the purposes set forth. either blade may be adjusted independently r 1 of the other, or both may be adjusted together ISAAC HEYSINGER' 5 by the same device. Witnesses:
2. The combination of ears 0, having per- JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, forations c and slots d, with the screw D and A. P. GRANT.
Correction of Letters Patent No. 236,890.'- I
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent- No. 236,890, gmnted January 25, 1881, to Isaac W. Heysinger for an improvement in Tool Handles the reference letters b' in line 98, on page 1, and in line 8, on page 2 of the printed specification attached to and forming a pal-rt of said Letters Patent are erroneously printed d; that the proper corrections have been made in the files and reeords of this Ofliee, and are hereby made in said Letters Patent.
Signed, eountersigned, and sealed this 22a day of March, A. D. 1881.
