E. K; BOTTLE. DUPLICATE SALES BOOK. APPLICATION FILED JULY 15, 1901.

F i g 2 Fig WITNESSES 0D UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIoE.
EDWARD KIRBY BOTTLE, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE CARTER- CRUME COMPANY, LIMITED, 0F NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF CANADA.
DUPLICATE. SALES-BOOK.
Application filed July 15, 1907. Serial No. 383,924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KIRBY Bo'r- TLE, residing at Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Duplicate Sales-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to duplicating books or pads.
One of the objects thereof is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this nature adapted for rapid and convenient manipulatio Another object is to provide a device of the above type capable of highly efficient use without the necessity for handling or touch ing the transferring or duplicating medium. Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims. 9
In the accompanying drawings wherein is shown oneof various possible embodiments of my invention; Figure l is a perspective View thereof showing the same at one stage of its manipulation, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the pad in condition for use, Fig. 3 is a plan of the same, certain parts being broken away in order to show the con- 4 struction more clearly.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of bon paper or its equivalent, but by means of this invention, among other aims, I contemplate remedying these defects by entirely doing away with the necessity for touching Patented Oct. 5, iaoe.
the transferring medium and providing a book capable not only of more cleanly but of more rapid use.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, there is shown in Fig. 1 thereof a pad comprising a back 1 extended as at 2* to form a cover, although the device may take the form of a pad detachably held in a permanent cover, if desired. Bound upon back 1 are the ends 3 of a series of leaves 4, each of which is reversely folded upon itself to provide leaf portions 5 and 6; Each leaf, moreover, is weakened as along the lines 7 and 8 in order to permit ready separation at these points, and there issecured upon the stub 9 a sheet of carbon paper or other transferring medium 10 adapted to be inserted between each set of leaf portions 5 and 6 as shown in the drawings. A portion of each leaf at adjacent the stub 9, and as herein shown, at one corner llis secured or connected to the upper folded leaf portion 6 of the next leaf beneath the same, as best shown at 12 in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The method of connection in the illustrative embodiment herein shown comprises a small amount of paste inserted between the under surface of the corner of each leaf portion 5 and the upper surface of the leaf portion 6 restingimmediately beneath the same.
It is to be understood that paste or other connecting means'may be positioned at any desired portion of the upper, part of. the leaves, although there are certain advantages inherent in the construction above described.
The method of use of the above described embodiment of my invention is substantially as follows: Assuming that the pad be in the condition shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, an inscription may be made upon the upper leaf portion 6, and is transmitted as by the sheet 10 to the upper surface of the leaf por tion 5. There isthus provided an original and duplicate record which may be detached from the pad by tearing along the line 7 and other, as along the line 8. Upon the leaf being torn from the stub, however, the con- 1 them.
' be interpreted as illustrative and not in a tion is maintained, and as the used original replaced in condition for use after each entry, which 1s consldered 1n accordance w1th ter contained in. the above description or nection 12 with the next succeeding leaf por-' and duplicate records are drawn from the pad, as in Fig. 1, this leaf portion is drawn outwardly from beneath the'carbon paper 10 and then swung back upon the pad, whereupon the used sheet tears itself from the unused portion by reason of the relative position of these members whereby there is a tendency to tear open the joint between It will thus be seen that the placing of the pad in condition for use is substantially automatic and results from the removal of the used copies without additional manipulation. This not only does away with the handling of the transferring element with above noted advantages, but renders the entire manipulation of the book more rapid, a feature of high importance in devices of this nature, and insures that it is the best practice. The construction is simple, durable and cheap, and its action rapid, convenient and practical.
As many changes could be made in the above. construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matshown in the accompanying drawings shall limiting sense.
Having described my lnventlon, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters and also along a line adjacent the bound end of its duplicate leaf portion, and means connecting one of the upper corners of each duplicate leaf portion with the corresponding upper corner of the original leaf portion immediately following the same.
2. In a device of the class described, a plurality of'leaves each of which is folded upon itself to form original and duplicate leaf portions, said duplicate leaf portions being bound together, each of said leaves being weakened along a line intermediate its original and duplicate leaf portions and also along a'line adjacent the bound end of its duplicate leaf portion, and means connecting the upper right hand corner of each duplicate leaf portion with the upper right hand corner of the original leaf portion immediately following the same.
In testimony whereof afliximy signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD KIRBY'BOTTLE.
