UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID O. HEDGES, OF OHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
COAL-SCUTTLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID O. Hnnons, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State 01 Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coal-scuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coal scuttles, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a coal scuttle with a removable bottom so that when this bottom wears out it may be replaced by a new one without the use of tools.
It is a well known fact that the bottom of a coal scuttle is the first to wear out, and when the bottom contains a hole the scuttle is practically useless, while the body portion may be intact. My invention seeks to overcome this defect in coal scuttles and to provide means whereby a new bottom may be readily set in by an unskilled person without special tools.
In the accompanying drawin Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a coal scuttle made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated. by the arrow.
Referring to the drawing for a more specific description of my invention, the nuineral 1 designates a coal scuttle which may be of the usual or any suitable shape. Near the bottom of the scuttle, which is usually circular in cross section, I secure an angle iron support 2 by means of suitable rivets 3, said angle iron support having one of its flanges secured to the body portion of the scuttle and the other flange extending inwardly to form a ring or support for the removable bottom. This removable bottom comprises a circular marginal flange 4 and a Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1908.
Patented Aug. 17, 1909.
Serial No. 423,229.
depressed central portion 5, said flange 4 being adapted to rest upon the support 2 and the depressed portion 5 to rest within the support, as shown in Fig. 1. When this bottom wears out it may be readily removed by any person without special tools by turning the scuttle upside down and knocking the bottom upward until itpasses out through the mouth of the scuttle. A new bottom may then be readily placed in the scuttle and driven down to its seat. Thus practically a new scuttle may be had for the cost of the bottom, which is very much less than the cost of the entire scuttle. These bottoms may be furnished and placed on sale at hard ware stores, house furnishing stores and other places where scuttles are to be purchased.
My invention is of simple construction, can be readily used by housekeepers, does not require the use of tools or any particular skill in removing the bottom and inserting a new one in a coal scuttle whenever required.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
The herein described coal scuttle, the bottom portion of which is substantially circular in cross section, an angle iron support in the form of a ring secured inside the scuttle at said circular portion, and a removable and renewable bottom provided with :1 marginal outwardly extending flange to rest upon the angle iron support, said bottom having a depressed central portion fitting snugly within the support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID O; HEDGES, Vitnesses T. H. JOHNSON, JAMES M. BROWN.
