Description

lKnow all men by these presents.-
'That I, MILTON W. CLARK, of the city and county tltitrd States @wat @imita MILTON W. CLARK, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO R. BALL & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 93,056, daad Jul/y 27, v1869-.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLITTER-HEADS.
The Schedule referred to .in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
of-VVorcest'er, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Cutter-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, `formin gra part of this specification, and inwhich- Figure 1 represents a side View ofimy improved cut'- ter-head, and
Figure 2 represents a front viewy of the same.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs, to make and use the same, I will describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists in dividing the cutter-head, and combining the sections thereof with the driving-shaft in such a manner, that the head can be adjusted for cutting rebates of various widths, as hereinafter explained.
By reference to the drawings, it will be seen that the disk of my improved cutter-head is formed, in this instance, of three sections, A, B, and C.
The section A is provided with a hub, a, (shown in the drawings, fig. 1, by dotted lines,) which is secured rinly to the driving-shaft-D, by set-screws, (also shown rin fig. 1 by dotted lines,) and prevented from turning thereon by a spline, e, which extends along one'side of the shaft D, between the stop-pieces E.
The section B is furnished with a hub, b, which is placed upon the shaft D at the right of hub a, and so airanged that it can be moved laterally along the shaft, but is held from turning thereon by the spline e.
The hub b is made somewhat larger than the hub a, and the section B is secured to it in such a manner that the latter may be brought into the same circular plane with the section A.
The section C is also furnished with a similar hub, c, and placed ou the shaft D at the left of hub a".
Hubs I1 and c are each provided with a set-screw, el, the end of which rests upon the spline e, and by means of said screws the sections B and Gmay be secured in any desired position.
Each of the sections, A, B, and O, are furnished with cutters F, secured to their outer edges in the usual manner; and the sections B and O each have a sawsegment, G, at their side, one at the right and the other at the left, as shown in the drawings.-
The segments G are secured and adjusted by means of clamp-bolts f.
Circular openings H are formed beneath the edge of the cutters, to keep them free from chips and shavings.
The operationis as follows:
XVhen it is desired to cut a rebate the same width as the cutting-knives, the three sections, A, B, and C, are all placed in the same circular plane, as shown in dark lines in the drawings; but when necessaryto eut a rebate wider than the cutting-knives, the set-screws d may be loosened and the section B moved to the right, and section (l to the left, (as shown in red lines, iig. 2,) until the cutters are a sufficient distance apart to cut the desired width, when, by tightening the screws d, the lsections are held in position.
The stop-pieces E are fixed to the shaft D, to prevent the sections from being moved too'far apart.
In case that only a slight addition to the width is desired, it will not be necessary to move l but one of the sections; and, if preferred, the head may be made with only one movable section, although I prefer to make-them with two movable sections, as indicated in the drawings.l i
If preferred, in making large heads, more than three sections may be' used.
Having described my improved cutter-head,
What I'elaim therein as new, and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cutter-head herein described, having one stationary and two laterally-adj ustable sections, substantially as sho-wn in the drawings, and for the purposes st forth.
a MILTON W. CLARK. Witnesses: i
