FOLDING COOP OR CRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ASA FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Linn Creek, in the county of Camden and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Coops or Crates, of which the following is a specification. The invention relates to an improvement 1n folding coops or crates, and is particularly directed to a collapsible structure of this character which may be readily arranged and secured in open or collapsed condition.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a folding coop in which the sections are arranged for hinged connection and adapted to be secured in open position by a tie rod, the tie rod being also utilized for maintaining the parts in folded or collapsed condition.
The invention will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top plan of the coop in open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts in folded position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the coop with the parts in open position. Fig. d is a similar view with the parts in folded position. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5--5 of F ig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, my improved coop includes a bottom 1, sides 2, ends 8, and top 4:, the respective ends being duplicates, as are also the sides. All of the parts are preferably of slatted or openworlr construction and wood or any other desired material may be used. The ends 3 are hinged at their lower edges, as at at, to the end edges of the bottom 1, and the sides 2 are hinged at 5 to the bottom, or more properly speaking to the strips 6 which are secured adjacent the side edges of the bottom. lVith this arrangement the sides are hinged in a plane above the hinged connection of the bottom, so that when the parts are folded the sides may overlie the ends without strain upon the connections. The upright cleats 7 of the ends are provided near their upper ends with eyes 8, so that the eyes of a particular end are in alinement transverse the coop. The top 4: is provided at appropriate points with depending eyes 9, which, when the top is in position on the upturned sides and ends, will dispose said eyes in alinement with each other and in alinement with the eyes 8 on the ends.
A tie bolt 10 is designed to pass through the side walls 2, the eyes 8 of the end walls and the eyes 9 of the bottom, each of the tie bolts being headed at one end and threaded at the opposing end to receive a nut beyond the end wall. It is to be understood that the two tie bolts one at each end will thus operate to hold the coop sections in open or coopforming position, locking the sides, ends, and top securely together. A brace strip 10 is secured beneath the bottom, having end extensions which project upwardly from the bottom and form stops or guards for limits ing the upward movement of the sides when arranging the same in coop-forming position. The guard ends 11 of the brace strip are of such height as to extend slightly above the upper surface of the top when all of the parts have been arranged in folded position, as will be presently described, and the guard sections are formed near their upper free ends with openings of a size to receive the tie bolts 10.
In arranging the coop in folded position the ends 3 are turned down upon the bottom, the sides turned down upon the ends and the top placed upon the downturned sides, said top, however, being inverted so that the eyes 9 thereof extend upwardly. The brace strips 10 and the openings are so formed in the guard sections 11 thereof that when the parts are in folded positions, as described, the eyes 9 on the bottom will be alined with the openings in the respective guard sections of each tie strip. The tie bolts 10 are then passed through the opening in the guard sections and the eyes 9 of the bottom thus secure the parts in folded position.
If desired the coop may be centrally divided by a partition 12 slidably inserted between guide cleats formed onthe side walls of the coop at appropriate points. It is to be understood that the coop may be constructed of any material and in any size desired.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new, is
A coop comprising a bottom, end sections movably connected with the bottom, side sections connected with the bottom, a top adapted to rest upon the end and side sections, each of said end sections and the top being provided with eye members, tie bolts engaging the sides and the eye members of the adjacent end section and top, and brace strips secured to the bottom and formed with openings to aline with the eyes in. the top when the latter is inverted upon the coop sections in folded positions whereby to provide for the use of the tie bolts in securing the parts in folded positions.
