FOLDING- CRATE.
Application tiled October 30, 1914.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HALL CHRrsTniN CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miiiiinburg, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in Folding Crates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in crates, the object of the invention being to provide an improved folding crate which may be readily set up, when which folded is rendered extremely compact so that it occupies but very little space when being shipped, another object being to provide an improved crate of this character which is cheap, strong and durable, and not likely to get out of order. v
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding crate constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same set up.
F ig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, showing the crate set up in full lines and in folded position in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is partly an end elevation and partly a transverse sectional view of the same, showing the crate in set up position in full lines and in folded position in dotted lines.
Fig. 4 is a plan of the crate.
The bottom 1 is here shown as comprising spaced slats 2 and cross bars 3 4 which are secured on the upper sides of the slats and are spaced from the ends thereof. The bar 4 is greater in vertical extent than thebar 3. Standards 5 are in the corners of the bottom, and have their lower ends secured on the upper sides of the outer slats 2. These standards are provided with vertical rabbets 6 in their inner corners at their outer sides and said standards are beveled inwardly and downwardly on their upper ends as at 7. Lower side slats 8 connect the ends of the cross bars and are arranged at the bottom of the crate and the upper ends of the standards are connected together by slats 9.
The end members 10-11 of the crate are each composed of vertical bars 12 at their ends and slats 13 which connect said vertical bars. The said end members are adapted to be respectively tted on the cross bars 3 4 Specification of Letters Patent.

and their bars 12 are provided at their outer sides with rabbets 14 whereby vertical flanges 15 are formed which fit in the rabbets 6 of the standards 5. rfhe said end members are connected to the cross bars 3 4 by hinges 16 which adapt said end members to be turned to vertical position when the crate is set up and also adapt them to be folded downwardly one upon the other, the vertical dimensions of the cross bars on which said end members are mounted adapting said end members when thus folded downwardly to be arranged in com` pact horizontal position.
rIhe side members 17 are composed of vertical end bars 18 and spaced slats 19 which connect said end bars and are secured on the outer sides thereof. Said vertical end bars are provided with rabbets 20 in their inner corners which arc attached thereto and engaged by the flanges 15 of the bars 12 of the end members, when the crate is set up. The lower ends of the vertical bars 18 are mitered as at 21 and connected by hinges 22 to the upper ends of the standards 5 and thereby said side members are adapted to be folded inwardly over the end members in overlapping relation when the crate is collapsed. rllo secure the crate in collapsed position one of the side members is provided with a hook 23 to engage a keeper 24 carried by the other side member'. Any suitable cover or top may be provided for the crate. y
lWhile I have herein shown and described t-he bottom, side and end members of the crate as slatted l would have it understood that such members of the crate may be of any suitable construction.
While l have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention l would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of theinvention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A folding crate comprising a bottom, side and end members, said bottom being provided at the corners with vertical standards, said standards having vertical rabbets on their inner sides, and the inner corners of the standards being beveled inwardly and downwardly, each of said end members being provided with a pair of vertical bars,
one ol' said bers being of greater height than the other of said bars, each of the bars of seid end members being,- provided at their outer sides with rabbets providing vertical ilanges adapted to fit in the rabbets of said standards, each of said side members having vertical end bars provided at their inner corners with rabbets in which the Vertical anges of the end members engage, the lower ends of said end bars being mitered and hinges Connecting the mitered ends of said end bars with the inwardly and downwardly beveled inner Corners of seid standw ards, and means forl holding the side and end members in collapsed position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HALL CHRISTIAN CAMPBELL.
