Description

G. J. MURPHY.
ATTACHMENT FOR GHANDELIERS.
APPLIGATION FILED JAN. 22, 1909.

Envowfoz M. m. v W/ ANDREW. n 6mm: m, mw-Lrmooanmins, msmaroils n a GEORGE J. MURPHY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR CHANDELIERS.
Application filed January 22, 1909.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Chandeliers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved attachment for chandeliers, the object of the invention being to provide improvements of this character which can be readily secured in position on a chandelier, and support bells or shades in position over the burners to protect the ceiling from the heat and smoke.
\Vith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view, and Fig. 3, is an enlarged fragmentary plan view.
1 represents the depending vertical member of a chandelier, 2 the horizontal members connected thereto, and 3 the burners at the ends of the members 2.
4 represents my improved clamp, which comprises two members exactly alike, each member consisting of a central semi-cylindrical clamping section 5, having laterally projecting perforated ears 6, to receive clamping bolts 7, and nuts 8 to effectually clamp the sections around the member 1 of a chandelier as clearly shown.
The semi-cylindrical sections are both provided with radial lugs 9, preferably integral with the sections 5, and these lugs 9 are made with dove-tailed grooves or inortises 10, to receive dove-tailed tenons 11, on the ends of radial arms 12, and when said tenons 11 are secured in the mortises by means of rivets 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, the arms will be effectually held against any in- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1909.
Serial No. 478,629.
dependent movement. The outer ends of these arms 12 are preferably bent into slight hook form as shown at 14 to support bells or shades 15 above the burners 3.
A construction of this kind can be inexpensively manufactured, and sold to the trade at a small cost, it can be easily attached to a chandelier by anyone of average intelligence without the employment of special tools, can be removed and attached to another chandelier whenever desired, and will most effectually support bells or shades above the burners and protect the ceiling from the smoke and heat.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangements of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scgpe of my invention.
aving thus described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a chandelier having a depending central supporting member, of an attachment comprising two semi-eyliiulrical sections adapted to be positioned around said vertical member, laterally projecting perforated ears on said sections, clamping bolts in said perforated ears clamping the sections around said member, radial lugs on said sections having dove-tailed mortises or recesses therein, arms, dove-tailed tenons on said arms secured in said mortises or recesses, the ends of said arms being bent into hook form, and bells or shades on the hooked ends of said arms.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in thepresence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE J. MURPHY.
