-specification of Letters Patent. 1 Patented June 15, 1909.
Application filed me so, 1906.," serial m sseuse.
To all whom it may concern: 1
I3e -itknown that I, ROBERT W. Soon, a citizen of the "United States, residing in Leeds Point, i ktlantic'countygNew Jersey,
have "invented certain Improvements in. Web-Holders for Rib-Knittin Machines, of
which the following is a speci 'cation.
The ob ectof my. invention is to provide a 121i) knitting machine with web holders of, such character that the knocking over of the stitcheson the ribbing needles can be effected without the use of'Weights, draft rolls, or the like, for imparting tension to the kmtted web. This object I attain'in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being.
' had to. the accompanying drawings, .111
which Figure 1 .is a view, partly inplanv and 2 pfirtly in sectional plan, of part of a circular itting machine provided with web holdersv and operating devices therefor, in accordance with my invention; Figs. 2, 3,4 and v5 are transverse sections, respectively, on the lines a'a, b'b, c-c, an dd-, Fig. 1,-and Figs. Sand 7 are sectional views illustrating modifications of my invention.
In Figs, 1 to 5 of the drawing, 1 and 2 r'epresent parts of two needle carriers, and-5 and 4 need es guided therein. The needle carriers may be the c linder and dial of an ordinary circular rib-Bin dles may, forknittingpur oses,be rojected and retracted in' said 'cy inder an dial by meansvoi cams of the usual character, in the c linder cam ring and dial cam plate, and
the machine may'have a rotating needle cylinder and dial and a stationary cylinder cam ring and dial cam plate, or a rotating cylinder cam ring and dial cam plate and a stationary cylinder and dial, a machine of the latter type being in the present instance adopted for illustrating my invention. The object .of my present invention isto provide such a knitting machine with web holderscapable of knocking over, the stitches upon 'the and thereby dispensdial or ribbing needles,
ingwith the use of weights, draft rolls, or like devices for imparting tension to ,theknitted' The combined. sinkers. and web holders 5 are of the usual character, andaregulded 1n radialgrooves in an annular bed 6, surrounding the upper-portion of 'the needle cylinder? I itting machine, the nee-.
will engage 1, beingradially reciprocated in said grooves by meansof cams ina ring 7' which isrotatably mounted upon the'bed .6 and is rotated bygengagement with any other available rotatmg member of the machine. In the. rescut instance, a" dog 20,- secured to the rmg 7 is enga ed by a post 21, which forms an ele'-.
ment 0' therotating structure.
The cam ring? has the usual earn 8 for retracting the web holders 5' and permitting the sinking of the cylinder stitches below the tops of those portions ofthe said we'b holders whlclr project beyond the hooks, and said c-almring also has the usual projecting cam9 for advancing the web holders in order-that saidhooks ,may engage with thestitches and prevent the rising of the web with the cyliniderineedle s when the latter'are again pro .jected, but as suchmovement of ,t'heweb holders does not impart, any tension to the rib stitchesit is customaryrin ordinary rib knitting machines, to use'weightsor draft mechanism for imparting tension to the knittedweb in order ,to' effect-the knocking over 1 of the rib stitches. Irender. such weights or draft mechanism unnecessary by imparting to the web holders 5 rising-andfa'lling movement in addition to their radial movement, such rising and falling movement being effected by means of cams-10 and 11, and in addition'to these cams Ialso prefer to use a supplemental projecting cam 12 cooperating w th the depressing cam 11' and serving to project the web holders and retain them'in-the projected POSIUOI) dur ng the time that they are being acted. upon by" said depressing-cam, so as to insure their :holdv upon the sinker wales of theweb While such depression is taking place. H
Iii-Fig.1, the line aa represents the pointat which the web holders 5, after having been retracted'by the cam 8 are raised by the cam IOjas shown in Fig'. 2, and the line l)b represents the point at which, after -.l1aving been thus raised the web holders have been projected, a's shown in Fig.3, so that they the sinker wales of the ribbed web. At the line c-c, the web holders are projected to a'still further extent by theaction' of the cam 12 as shown in Fig. and at the line d--d the web holders, while thus Y projected and in engagement withthezsinker a so 1 1, $6 a mantra sinker wales, andc'ause knocking over of the stitches upon thedial needles, the latter l13V- ing previously been projected-to receive, at r the clearing point e, the fresh yarn, preparatory to being retracted at the knocking. over 1 point (1, so as'to draw the stitches of the new course through the stitches hanging-from the needles and which now constitute the preceding course of the knitting.
W'hile 'it is preferable to einployjthe unitary'web=holdershown in Figs. '1 to' 5, my
"invention is also susceptibleofembodiinent "inmachines having-two-part web holders,
15 'onepart being'a'cted uponiby cams whereby V reciprocatingmotion'isimparted to the web liolde'nand the other'part being acted'upon by a ca mor cam's whereby the ri'singandfalling movement is imparted to the same.
7 20. In the'constr uction shown in FigHG'the .webhol der 5- has a stem pivotally mounted *within -a recess in a sliding bit 5", the web holder'having a slot 15 for the reception of a *cam flange 16 on a member of the rotating cam ring, which -fla-nge"is so formed as to 1 impart the desired -ris-ing-andfalling movement' to the web holders-at the pro or times. In'the co'nstruction shown in ig. '7 the ;webholder "5 is acted upon bythe'cams whereby reciprocating movement is iinpart ";ed to it,and said web-holderisslotted for the reception of;-a tongue 17 on a bit 5 which is pivotally niounted a member-of the ring v band is acted upon by a suitable camg'roove 19- in the cam ring 7, whereby rocking movement is im'parted-to the bit andcorrespondin rising and -falling movementto the web ho der 5, 'these'modifications being =suflicient to indicatetothose skilled inthe 4 0 art many other ways in whichthe details of construction can be varied Without departing 3 from the essential features of my invention. W'hen the machine :is one designed for I knitting either ribbed or plain webs, the web holders act in conjunction with the cylinder needles when the machine is knitting plain web, in'the same-way as is usual in ordinary plain web machines, and while, in such cases, the rising-and-falling movement-of the web holders is not objectionable,it isialso not necessary, and the rising and depressing zcamsmay,if desired, be so mounted as to be thrown out of 0 erationduring the knitting {of suohplain'weh, as for instance by slotting 'the brackets to which'said 03111152113 secured,
-- asshown in Figs. 3'and5.
I have shown my. invention as applied to a circular-knitting .machine', but, ,as' .will be "=evident,,it can be applied-to; straight 111a 6 'ohines, 'if desired, and while the termsfi-ising and falling or raising and: lowering, are strictly applicable only to the 'mbvementsof, "the web holders in a vertical machine, dieseterms are'sirnply intended" to indicate ,cer-
tain movements ofthe web holders in respect the desireidtension tosaijd itothe heedles' of thehiacliin e, and hence are applicable to like movements of the web v holders in machines other than ver tical. 5
I claimz a v 1. The combination of the'needle carriers, needles and" knittingcams of a rib knitting machine, with web holders and operating means therefor, bearing such relation ito 'the retracting cams for the ribbing needles that said web holders are caused to engage and impart tensionin a directiqn transverse ,tothe direction of movement" of the ribbing iiecdies to sinker wales 'ot a courseprecedingthat 'Whose stitches are'being drawnbyrsaidi'rih bing needles, there'byl knocking over' l ;the' stitches of saidpreceding course, g,
