PUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 1, 1908.
Patented May 4, 1909.
Serial No. 446,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. CARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montchanin, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to puzzles and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a puzzle comprising a tray having a surrounding flange and a series of zigzag fences upon the tray and a circular compartment at the center of the tray provided with suitable openings for the admission of a series of balls or spheres, the solution of the puzzle being to place all the balls within the circular compartment by manipulating the tray.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a puzzle of the character referred to which shall be interesting and difiicult of solution.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan view of a device made in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a tray comprising a base portion having a surrounding marginal flange 2. Upon the base I secure a series of zigzag fences 3 spaced apart at the ends to form openings or gateways 4.
Disposed centrally upon the tray 1 is a circular wall 5 forming a central compartment and provided with outturned feet 6 through which the fasteners 7 are driven to secure said wall to the base 1.
Formed at four equidistant points in the wall 5 are gateways or openings 8. Within the compartment formed by the wall 5 is a mat 9 comprising a disk of paper or similar material.
A series of balls or marbles 10 are used as accessories to the tray and any suitable number of these marbles may be used.
In solving the puzzle it is necessary to manipulate the tray to place all of the marbles Within the central compartment upon the mat 9, and this is rendered difficult owing to the zigzag fences and the openings at four equidistant points between the fences and in the central compartment.
My invention may be manufactured at low cost, and is sufficiently di'lii cult of solution to be of interest to young and old.
I claim:
A puzzle comprising circular base hav ing a marginal flange, a series of zigzag fences upon the base, said fences being spaced apart at their ends to form openings between them, a central compartment the walls of which are secured to the base and provided with openings therein in line with the openings between the fences, and a series of balls or marbles placed upon the base.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDW ARD F. CARNEY.
