Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT 'oEEroE JOI-IN F. COLLINS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PUZZLE.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN F. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and amusing Puzzle, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to a. new and amusing puzzle, and has for its object to provide a puzzle whereby diierent balls are to be caused to roll into different compartments without touching the balls with the hands, and this puzzle will not only require skill but also a great amount of steadiness of the hand.
IVith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then speciiically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan view of the puzzle; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig.. l; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 8 of Fig. l.
This puzzle consists of a preferably square opeirtop box A, made of pasteboard or any other suitable material, and in each corner of the box are formed inclosures B, and these inclosures are formed by bending a strip C of pasteboard or the like, and securing the ends to the inside of the upright sides of the box. These strips C are the same height as the sides of the box and have openings D formed therethrough. The bottom of each of the inclosures bears letters spelling a color different from that of the others, or each may be differently colored from the others.
E are balls or marbles, eight in number, and arranged in pairs, each pair colored a different color to correspond with the colors of the inclosures B.
The object of theI game is to have all the balls or marbles iirst outside of the inclo- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 14, 1909, Application filed March 5, 1909.
Serial No. 481,297'.
sures, and then by manipulating and tilting the box A to cause the marbles to all enter the inclosures colored or lettered to correspond to the color of the marbles, thus when the. puzzle is solved there will be two marbles in each inclosure of the same color as the inclosure, as for instance, the pink marbles or balls will be in the pink compartment, the green in the green compartment, etc.
F represent other strips of pasteboard or like material which are bent around one or more of the inolosures, as shown in Fig. l, and secured to the sides of the box, the same as the strips C. These strips F also have openings G formed therethrough, through which the balls or marbles may roll, and these additional strips F are only for the purpose of making it harder to solve the puzzle, and may be arranged in each corne-r of the box or only around one or two inclosures, as desired.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modiiications could be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim, is
An open top rectangular box, strips, one bent at each corner and secured to the sides of the box so as to form inclosures, said strips each provided with an opening facing' the central portion of the box, said inclosures distinguished from each other by color designations, additional strips bent around one of the inclosures, said additional strips each provided with an opening facing said central portion, pairs of balls or marbles, each pair being' colored alike and colored differently trom the other pairs, the respective colors corresponding to the color designations of the inclosures, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
