Description

R. ZIMMERMANN.
' GARMENT SUPPORTK-IR.
APPLICATION FILED MAR I, 1908.
Patented May 4, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD ZIMMERMANN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4., 1909.
Application filed March 7, 1908. Serial No. 419,626.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lgnown that I, RICHARD ZnuMEie- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and nomical in construction and e Iicient in its operation.
In devices of this character, heretofore it has been the common practice to provide a flexible member adapted to encircle the body or limb of the wearer, and to provide a single pendent flexible member provided with a single fastener.
One of the special objects of this invention is to provide an improved garment supporter having two flexible pendent members, each provided with fasteners whereby the hose or other garment may be more securely held in the desired position.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide an improved form of clasp or retainer to,
be used in conjunction with a flexible garmerit supporter of the class described. To the attainment of these ends and-the accomplishment of other new and useful objects which will be apparent, the invention consists of the features of novelty described in the followim specification, pointed out more particularly in the appended. claims, and shown in the accompanying drawing.
In the said. drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig; 2 is a view of the device in position for use on the limb of the wearer. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of thepreferred form of clasp or retainer through which the ends of the ilcxible memher is passed in forming the loop for encircling the body or limb of the wearer. Fig. 4 is a sectional 'VlCW on line l"4.-of Fig. 3. .l ig.
5 is a detail view showing a modified form of clasp or retainer which may be used instead of the preferred form illustrated in F 3.
The device is constructed from a continuous flexible member 10, which is preferably elastic, and of a single piece of material although not necessarily so. A loop dcsigned to encircle the limb or body of the .wearer is formed in the strip 10 by assing the ends thereof throu h a suitable .'c asp or retainer, the preferred .ormof which is desig: natcd in the drawings by the reference charactor 11. The folds of the member 10 pass through this retainer or clasp loosely so that the loop is readilyadjustable while in pee, and the free ends 10 and 10 of the flexible member 10 are allowed to depend from the clasp or retainer 11 and are provided at their extremities with suitable garment fasteners 12. These fasteners may be of the form illustrated in the drawing, or of any desired construction, andsince thcy'form no part of the present'mvention, no further description of t e form herein shown is deemed necessary. These depending ends 10 and 10", having the garment-fasteners at their extremities, are preferably adjusted in use to diverge as they extend downwardly, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, in order that the garment fastenerscn their extremities may be inserted on the garment to be held at some distance apart from. each other, thereby so curing the garment very firmly in the desired position and furnishing a much more secure means of fastening the same than that on the ordinary form of device of this character,
in which only a sin le fastener is employed. Since the folds of the flexible memberpass somewhat loosely through the apertures 11 and 11 in the clasp or retainer, it will be seen that any tensions or strains coming upon the depending ends which support the garment are immediately, communicated. to the por-' tion encircling the limb or body of the wearer, and tend to tighten the loop, thereby insuring that the loop will be fetamedin its desired position and so furnish a secure support for the garment,- v
W'hilc the form of olas or retainer 11 shown in detail in Fig. 3 is t e preferred form and consistsyas will be seen, ofthe two ring" members s accd a sufficient distance apart to allow tic flexible member to Pass be' tween them and is joined together at 11, yet it will be apparent that many modifications of this member may be provided tdtake the placcof this part without detracting from the purpose or spirit of the invention. For example, a simple form of such modified clasp or retainer is shown in Fig. 5, consisting of a single ring 13 'of any suitable material. This form in operation performs the withno means for retaining it on the flexible member when the device is not in use, which permits of its being readily disengaged or lost off the device, which under certain conditions may be objectionable.
What I claim is:
1. A garment supporter comprising a continuous flexible member, a retainer through which the ends of the flexible member are loosely passed to form an adjustable loop beyond the retainer, and means on the free ends of the flexible member for securing them to the garment 2. A garment supportercomprising a continuous flexible elastic member, a retainer through which the ends of the flexible elastic member are loosely passed to form an adjustable loop beyond the retainer, and means on the free ends of the flexible member for securing them to the garment.
3. A garment supporter comprising a continuous flexible member, suitable garment fasteners on the endsof the flexible member,
and a ring through which a fold of the flexible member is passed to provide a loop beyond the retainer and adapted to encircle the body or limb of the wearer.
4. In a garment supporter in combination,
-a flexible member provided at each free end thereof with suitable garment fasteners, and a retainer through whiel'i a fold of the said flexible member is passed whereby an adjustable loop is formed in said flexible memher, said retainer comprising two spaced annular members and suitable means for connecting said annular members together on approximately diametrically opposite portions thereof whereby spaces between said annular members are formed to retain the folds of the flexible member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 3rd day of March A. D. 1908.
