I Specification of Letters Patent.

Application med hugustl l, 15598 seziaiitoeeae ze.
' To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, EDWARD A. INGRA- HAM, residing at North Sydney, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Cigar.- Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of de- Vices especially designed for attachment to cigars, to prevent the ashes, and fire from being accidentally knocked off of thecigar,
. and scattered.
The invention has for its obj set to provide an ash protector of'this character adapted to cover and protect the lighted end of a cigar, and by means of which the ash and sparks are prevented from dropping ofi the end of the same so that the cigar can be safely smoked'in places where there would be danger in dropping a spark from a cigar.
The invention further has for its object to provide a cigar ash protector by means of which'a cigar will burn evenly, and last longer The invention further has for its object to rovide a cigar ash protector which can easily be attached to and detached from a cigar, which can be adjusted on'the cigar as it burns shorter, which can be used with or without a cigar holder; and which is simple in construction, light and portable, and inexpensive to' manufacture.
The invention consists of a ci ar ash pro tector, constructed and arrange as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
' Figure l, is a perspective view ofthe invention showing it in position for use. Fig. 2, is a side view of the invention in folded position. Fig. 3 is a modification of the invention. Fig. 4 is another modification of the invention. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a cigar holder showing a perforating attachment in connection therewith. Fi 6 is a similar view showing a modified orm of perforating attachment.
The invention comprises a cap or casing 1, of suitable shape to fit over the lighted end of a cigar, and as here shown is in the shape of a thimble, formed of wire gauze, or perforated material, which is non combustible and serves as a screen. The ca 1, is preferably provided atits open (an with a rim 2 of metal or other suitable material, to reinforce the wire gauze, and of a proper or casin of the clgar by unclamping and adjusting diameter to fit over a cigar 3, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of drawing.
In order to retain the cap 1 on the cigar, and also to hold it in adjusted position thereon, a suitable device is provided therefor and as here shown, consists of an arm 4, pivoted at one end-to the rim 2, and having mounted on its other end a suitable clutch 5, adapted to clamp a cigar. The clutch 5, is formed of two curved arms 6, adapted to fit over and clamp a cigar as shown in Fig.1, said, arms 6, being each formed with a flattened portion 7, through which the arm 'projects and terminates in a head 8 to keep the arms 6 on the arm 4:. The arms 6, are each formed with a handle 9, said handles extending'in opposite directions to each other. The arms 6 are adapted to open and close toward each other, their flattened portion'i, turning on the arm 4c, the arms 6, being operated by the handles 9. To hold thearms 6 in clamped position on a cigana coiled spring 10 is mounted on the arm 1, and connected with the arms 6 adjacent to their pivoted connection with arm at, said spring by its tension acting to draw the arms 6 toward each other when they are expanded; The handles 9 not only serve to operate the arms 6, but may also serve as a holding support for the hand to hold the cigar. As the cigar burns shorter the cap 1, is moved over the burning end the arms j In use the ashes of the cigar may be knocked ofi without removing the cap from the cigar, the ashes sifting through the cap. When not in use the arm 4: is folded up on the casing 1, and may he carried in a suitable receptacle.
The adjustable clutch 5, adapts the device to be used with ci ars of difi'erent size,
I and it may be made 0 a size and shape to adapt it for cigarettes.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the arm 4 is dispensed with and a thimble 11 of gauze br perforated material is provided with a metal rim 12 having the circumferential slots 13. Pivoted to a lip or projection 14 on the rim 12 is a clutch l5 consisting of two curved arms 16 pivoted on a pin 17 in the lip 14 and each having a curved lateral operating handle 18. i A coiled spring 19 mounted on the pivot pin 1.7, and
engaging the arms 16 acts upon the latter to draw them together and clamp a cigar on shown in Fig. 3 the arms 16 are adapted to swing through the slots 13 in adjusting the clutch to a 01 ar.
*In the modlfication in Fig. 4 a thimble 20 of gauze or perforated material has a metal rim 21 with a projection 22 depending therefrom on which is mounted a clutch 23, consisting of curved arms 24 pivoted on a pin 25 on the projection 22 and having lateral operating arms 26. .A coiled spring 27 on the pivot pin 25 and engaging the arms 26 acts upon the latter to draw'them together and clamp a cigar on which the thimble 20 is mounted.
If desired the holders shown in Figs. 1 and 4 of the drawing may each be provided with a spur or needle 28 for perforating the end of the cigar so as to permit the same to draw freely, and in some cases one side of the holder may be provided with a knife 29 for cutting or slitting the cigar when the latter. is introduced within the holder, as best illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
It will of course be understood that when using the perforating attachment the cap or holder will be first positioned on the reduced end of the cigar and then removed and placed on the lighted end thereof, in the manner before described.
Having described the invention, I c1aim:
7 foldable laterallyon the outside of the cap.
2. A cigar ash protector, consistin of a.
screen cap, adapted to fit over the lighted wise from and pivotally mounte on said cap, and spring actuated clamping members, hinged on said arm and adapted to clamp a cigar. v
3. A cigar ash protector, consisting ofa foraminous, cap, adapted 'to fit over the lighted end of a'cigar, and having a reinforcing band around one end thereof, an
arm hinged to said band, and a pair of spring actuated clamping members hinged to said arm, and adapted to clamp a cigar.
4. A cigar ash protector, consisting of a screen cap, adapted to fit over the lighted clamping member and arm being foldedagainst the screen cap. a
5. A clgar ash protector including a f0- which the thimble 11 is mounted. I As end of a cigar, an arm projectin lengthw end of a cigar, an arm extending lengthwise raminous cap adapted to fit over the lighted the cap, and a perforating attachment disposed within said cap.
