To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, HARRY S. Games and CHARLES L. MoGLoUD, citizens of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, and Kenilworth, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cinder-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to an improvement in cinder guards for attachment to car Windows, and the object is to provide a folding, portable guard adapted more especially for temporary attachment to a day-coach window, the guard being of such a nature and construction that the traveler may fold it into small compass and carry it about in a valise.

A further object is to provide a device of the character mentioned which may be used to advantage as an advertising medium.

Still another object is to provide a simple and inexpensive appliance capable of quick attachment or removal from the car window, it being so constructed and adapted that it is reversible, rendering it capable of use on either side of the car.

l/Vith the foregoing objects in view, our invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.

In'the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing our improved guard in position, Fig. 2 is a view of the guard in elevation, Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the guard in its folded position.

A, and B, represent the two sections of the guard. These sections are preferably of, or approximately of, the same width and they are connected at their adjacent edges by any approved form of hinges 1, 1, as illustrated. The sections are so hinged together that they will fold one way only, so that the outer edge of the inner section forms a shoulder for the inner edge of the outer section when the Specification of Letters Patent.

guard is in place in the car window, the pressure of air resulting from the rapidly moving car holding the outer section in its open position. Section A is correspondingly mitered at opposite ends as at 2, 2, to conform to and fit the window sill 3. The opposite ends are also notched as at 4:, 1, adjacent to the mitered portion to receive and fit the window sash when lowered, provision being made for the sash to drop well into the notch or recess to afford a lock to retain the guard in place. Adjacent to the notches 4, 4, the ends of section A are preferably out ofi at right angles or approximately at right angles to the inner edge to fit the flat portion 6 of the window sill which comes just inside of the window.

An eyelet or other fastening 7, is provided to receive a cord 8 to prevent the loss of the guard if the window should be raised without taking hold of the guard, or to insure against its loss while adjusting it in a window.

It is an object of our invention to provide a device of the character described for advertising purposes, while possessing utility as a cinder 'uard, and it will be readily understood that it is a device of such a character that it might be sold to houses for advertising purposes, or given away to customers for use in traveling, so while advertising a house, they would at the same time be utilized for a useful purpose, and thus retained indefinitely.

In placing the guard, it is so adjusted at the forward edge of the window that the pressure of air will hold it open, and when removed from the window, it may be folded flat and easily packed away.

Obviously the device may be made at a trifling expense, so that its utility as an advertising medium would be insured, and at the same time, it would al'lord comfort to persons traveling in day-coaches which are not ordinarily equipped with guards.

More or less slight changes might, of course, be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention,

and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise construction herein set forth, but

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A guard for car windows comprising two sections hinged together at one side of their adjacent vertical edges whereby the sections are capable of folding in one direction only, the top and bottom edges of the inner section having a sloping portion to conform to the sloping section of the window-sill, recesses conforming to the shape of the lower edge of the window sash, and fiat bearing surfaces adapted to rest upon the fiat portion of the window sill.
