Letters VPatent N 91,660, dated vJ une 22, 1869.
IMPRQVED APPARATUS FOR WINDING- MAPS, SONGS, CURTAINS, &c.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sanne.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, J AMES S. Os'rnANDnn, of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented a new and improved Device for Revolving or Turning, `as may be required, Curtain or other Rollers or Spindles, and the like, which may be beyond the reach of a person desiring to operate them; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specili-l cation, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Rollers for curtains, maps, illustrations of lessons, songs, and the like, when placed high above the reach of thehands, have been operated by cords and pulleys, connecting each with their individual roller, to serve as a means to operate the same, and'can only be thus arranged and operated at considerable expense, where manyiare used in a room or building, as Vcach must pulleys; and while cords and pulleys" are necessary, they are tobe considered, as now used, as necessary adjuncts, and not adornments, be they as haudsomely fitted and arranged as they possibly may be.
Another objection to such fixed individual cprds and pulleys is, that persons other than those whose duty or business it is to operate such rollers, can have equal facilities for effecting a change, which, under soignel circumstances, would not be advantageous or desirable. j By my invention,I,abrd a ready means of operating such rollers, which consist in a longhandled bar or stall', provided with a pair of pulleys and an endless leys, placcd'ncar the handle ofthe staff, which crank, when turned, rcvolves'or turns a keyatt-achcd to the second pulley, placed on the further end of the stattf.
lhe bearings of the secondor further pulley are provided with a slotted shank, which will permit the cord being tightened when desired. y Y
'lo enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe in reference to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, the same letters indicating like parts.
In the drawingslA represents a bar or stati', of wood or metal, l-oi' suitable length, which would enable the person to reach a roller or otllerf device to be operated.
The lower end'oi' the' saidvbaror stad' terminates in.
a suitable handle, a, for the operator to grasp.
Placed just above the handle a isl the pulley B, provided with a crank, b.l
Placed at the further end of the bar or stati' A is a second pulley, G, having its bearings attached to a shank 'or sliding piece, E.
The said shank or sliding piece E is secured to the `end of'4 the bar ,bymeans of a set-screw working through the slot e of the shank E, by which the pulley O can have its distance', from the pulley B increased orlessened.
f Attached to the shaft c of t-hc pulley O 'is a winding key or wrench, D, which revolves with the saidV pulley G.A
a-square` hole ruiming longitmlinally, and is intended to receive the spindle of whatever is intended to be turned or rolled when the said pulley is operated.
An endless cord, F, connects` and'runs with lthe Atwo pulleys B and O, and when the crank b is turned, thel pulley B will, by means of the-cord 'F and the pulley G, cause the wrench-key-D to rotate and roll lor unroll a curtain or the like, to which this invention may, be attached 'or applied. f
"lo operate with this device, the operator reaches v with the upper end of the stall' the spindle g, of the roller G, tig. 2, and slips the wrench-key D on the spindie g, and turns the crank l), which rotates, as ihas'been described, thewrench-key D, applied tothe spindle of y Witnesses:
ALEX. SELKIRK, CHARLES SELKIRK.
