Patented March 30, 1909.
Application led October 8, 1906. Serial No. 337,994:
T o all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JAMES B. MoR'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing a t Morehead City, in the county of Carteret and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Trousers, of which the following is ^a specification.
This invention hasrelation to garments of the character indicated and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The obj ect of the invention is to provide a air or trousers with means for takln up or ettin out the Waist. Said means is ocated direct y above the pockets'and the slack that 1s taken from the waist band is folded in at the pocket in such manner as to permit the garment to fit snugly about. the waist of the wearer without bulging or puckering.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure l is a view of a person having on a pair ofl trousers made in accordance with the resent invention. Fig. 2 1s a. detail view 00king at the outside of a garment waist portion, one of the lapping flaps being turned back to show'the under parts; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the'garment.
.The trousers 1 or similar garment is provided at its sides with openings 2, 2. The waist portion of the garment at the openings 1n the sides thereof is formed with iiaps and 4. The flap 4 overlyin the edge ofthe flap 3 preferably to a considerable extent. The outer flap 4 is preferably joined to the inner flap 3 some distance below-` the upper edge of the waist porti n of the trousers as at 5 so that there is considerable freedom of move- The . pockets 6 are sewed at their edges to the flaps 3 and 4 in such manner that the said ila s constitute mouths for the said pockets. T e eyes 7 are attached to the inner sides of the trousers at the waist thereof and the strips 8 are attached at their ends to the ed es of the under .'ifiiapsI 3, and ass through t e eyes 7 then 'through the c as s 9 which are attached to efundersideso the flaps 4 and are adapted -through the loo s and then backward to engage the buckles 10 which are attached to the outer side of the trousers at the waist thereof.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that the strips 8 may be let out in order to increase the diameter of the waist of the trousers or the said strips 8 may be drawn inwards in order to reduce the diameter of the waist and trousers. It will also`be observed that the slack that is taken from the waist is virtually folded intothe pockets. Such a structure is admirably adapted for all sorts of trousers where it is not desired to use Suspenders or similarl supports and especially where perf, sons desire to go without a coat or outer garment.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent is A garment comprising a front and a back vseparated by hip openings, flaps carried by the hip portions of the front an overlapping the hip portions of the back tofclose the hip openings, pockets secured at their edges to the flaps and serving to receive the slack taken from the back, the flaps constituting the mouths of the pockets', loops secured to the hi portions of the front and concealed behin 'the flaps, clasps secured to the inner sides of the front flaps adjacent to their rear edges thus to be concealed from view, and straps secured to the hip portions of the back and extending forward behind the flaps and ehind the fiaps and t ou h the clasps, the straps forming thereby lc osures for the pocket mouths, and means for attaching the free nds of the straps to the side portions of the ack. 4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature Sco'r'r SWINDELL, .i J. C. B. MoR'roN.
