1IMZEROVIED HATCHWAY FOR "BUILDING-S.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom 'it/may concern Be it known that I, ISRAEL Anims, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hatchways for-Buildings; and I do hereby declare that the following is afnll, clear, and exact description ofthe construc- 'tion and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciiicatiou, in which- 'Figure l is a vertical section of a hatchway having my said improvement applied thereto; Figure 2, a plan view of' one of'the hatches of the same; and Y Figure 3, a transverse section of lig 2 on the dotted Like letters and numbers of' reference indicate the same parts when in the different figures. The object of my improvement is to allow the fall or burden-rope tov traverse the closed hatches above ,those through which the-burden is to be passed with'- draught consequent upon the necessity heretofore aris ing of opening the upper hatches, or of having alarge slot in them, to allow the necessary traversing-motions ofthe said burden-rope.
My invention consists in the application to a hatch ofa traversing slide, in combination with adjustable friction-rollers, operating substantially as hereinafter described.

The hatches E each consists of a platform made to it the hatchway, and hinged to the same, and also balanced by a weight, G, attached'to a cord, h, which passes 'over a grooved pulley, a', and connects with the opposite edge of the hatch, and thus renders it more easy to raise the hatch, and also keeps it from falling shut when openedf.` (See iig. 3.) j
Directly in line with the burden-rope C, and par-` allel with the side of the cylinder D, from which it is suspended, a slot, e', is made in the hatch E, and par allel with this slot two recessed guide-ways e c" are fixed to the hatch, and between these two guide-ways e" the slide F is made to slip freely, it being also made long enough to prevent the slot e' from being uncovered by its movements longitudinally from end tb end of the hatch.
Hinged to the upper side of the slide F 'there are two blocks f f, which meet together in the middle ofthe length of the said slide, and are each held down in contact therewith by a tension-spring, 3.
The grooved friction-rollers f f rotate 0n journals in the abutting ends of the blocks f f", and together afford, by their gooves, a round hole, in which the mo- -tions of the rope C are confined, a more capacious opening, vor slot 4, being also made through the slide F, at a par-t directly below the rollers.
In the operation ot hoisting and lowering it will be seen that as the burden-rope C is being wound and unwound by the rotating-cylinder D, it will move the slide F longitudinally to the right and left alternately, by bearing against the friction-rollers f j" accordingly, and that therefore all injury to the said rope will be avoided by the rotatory motions of the rollers, while the slots c', in the closed hatches above and below those required to pass the burden, will be kept closely covered, and therefore the objectionable currents of air `through the said upper and lowerhatches, in cold weather, will 4be efl'ectually prevented;that, as the roller-blocks f f'arc hinged to the slide F', `as. described, they will readily yield upward, so as to 1ct the usual hook c on the lower end of the4 rope C pass with- .ont any diicnlty, if the said rope should be thoughtlessly or mischieviously wound up by any one without opening the hatches, and that they will also allow of the hook being entered between the rollers j" f' from above with facility.
It will also be seen that when these improved hatches are closed, all draughts of air from one story to another throughthe hatchway willI be prevented, which is a matter of great importance in case of fire.-
' Having thus fully described my improvement,
' NVhat I claim as new therein, of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following, viz:
I claim, in combination with the hatch E, provided with the slot c' and guide-ways e" e, as described, the traversing slide F, provided with the hinged blocks f f and the grooved friction-rollersff, as described, the said parte being arranged to operate together in the manner and for the purpose described.
