HERMAN F. KLINGELE, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
BACK-00MB FASTENER.
ivo. eio,'eeo.
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN F. KLINGELE, of Worcester, in the county of INorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Comb Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This'invention relates to new and useful 'mprovements in combs and has relation more particularly to combs employing a retaining medium.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel device of this hind employing members pivcted with relation to the comb proper for holding the comb in position.
. It is also an object of' this invention to provide means carried by the comb proper acting in conjunction with the pivoted members to hold said pivoted members in their operative position.
Furthermore it is an object of this invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, efficient in practice and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. A
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter' more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which- Figure 1, is a view in elevation showing the position of the retaining members before they are placed in operative position. Fig. 2, is a View illustrating the reverse side of the comb as shown in Fig. 1, the retaining members being in operative position.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a comb which may be of any ordinary or preferred construction. Pivoted to the back of the comb adjacent each side thereof is a member 2, the pivotal connection between the back of the comb and the member being intermediate the length of the member. The member 2, may be of any ordinary structure, it being only essential that they be provided with some means for engaging the hair of the user when in applied position. In the drawings Specification o Letters Patent. Application filed July 27, 1907.
Patented Jan. 19, 1909.
Serial No. 385,933.
they are here shown as provided with a comb like structure as this form has always been found to meet the requirements of practice.
It is to be stated, however, that the number of teeth in the comb-lile structure may be varied as necessity may require. This comblike structure or the retaining means is carried by the lower portion of the members while the upper ends of the members are provided with the angular portions 8, whereby the members may readily be turned on their pivots. This pivotal connection is of no special structure and as illustrated is made through the medium of the rivets 4. It is to be observed that the teeth of the members 2, are of varying lengths and are curved concentric with the pivots of the members. This is done in order to facilitate and assure a more effective engagement of the hair.
When the comb is applied to the head, the members 2, are in the position shown in Figi. 1, and when the comb has been properly applied, the members 2, are swung inward as shown in Fig. 2, and said member will engage the hair and hold the comb against displacement. In order that the members 2, may be held in an operative position, lugs 5, are carried by the back of the comb and are positioned at a point within the comb beyond the rivet 4. When the members 2, are swung into the position in Fig. 2, the upper' portions of the members 2, will spring over the lugs 5, and under normal conditions, the members 2, will be held against an upward movement. It is well to observe at this point that the members 2, must possess a certain amount of resiliency.
1What I claim is- As an article of manufacture, a comb provided with lugs on the rear face thereof, one adjacent each upper corner, supplemental toothed members pivotally mounted intermediate their length, below said lugs, said toothed members having resilient extensions beyond the pivots, adapted to be sprung over and beyond said lugs, said extensions terminating in angular gripping portions extending inwardly therefrom.
HERMAN F. KLINGELE.
