HAT-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 614,308, dated November 15, 1898.
Application filed September 15, 1897. Serial No. 651,756. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RENE PERSELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Ioboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hat-fasteners, and more particularly to that class thereof which is designed to obviate the discomfort and annoyance occasioned by the use of the ordinary hat-pin.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastener for hats which canbe applied thereto without marring or mutilating the hat and which can be used without exposing the same to an extent as will elicit criticism. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a hat-fastener which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View of a hat fitted with my improved fastener, showing the means employed in se curingthe hat to the head of the wearer; Fig. 2, a plan view of my improved fastener; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 a front View thereof.
In the drawings, (1 denotes a hat of the strawsailor type, which has attached thereto by means of elastic bands I) b or other suitable devices a sheet-metal hook cl, which is composed of the following elements, as hereinafter described. The hook cl is composed of thin metal and consists of a cross-plate, the extremities of which are bent over to form clamps g 9 by means of which the bands I) b are attached to said hook, and a central projection formed into a hook h, by means of which the fastener is made operative.
it denotes a side comb ordinarily employed in securing the hair after it has been dressed.
The operation of my improved hatfastener is substantially as follows: The fastener is secured by any desired means to the lining or band of the hat by means of the bands I) bZ'which, as aforesaid, are preferably elastic and attached to the hook proper by being clamped thereto by means of the turned edges thereof. Then the hat is placed upon the head and said fastener hooked upon the side comb or upon special pins prepared for this in the drawings, are particularly objection able unless applied to the hat in precisely the same spot each time, as they are apt to leave unsightly openings in said hat or its ribbon.
By the means above described the objects of my invention are fully attained. I have produced a fastener which will admit of the use without the hat-pin, some of the objectionable features of which are above enumerated, and which is simple in construction, efficient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
It is to be observed that it is not my inten tion to limit the invention to the precise construction herein shown and described, as it is obvious that there may be many variations in minor details of construction which will come within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with a hat, of a depending fastening device comprising a cross-plate, provided at its lower edge with a hook extending partially across the same and adapted to engage an upwardly-directed side comb, the ends of said cross-plate being provided with eyes or loops, and two longitudinal elastic bands secured to the hat at one end, and having their other ends secured within said eyes or loops of the cross-plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of September, 1897.
RENE PERSELLE.
