WILLIAM NELSON CAVILE R, OF :SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK LOGUE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 12, 1909.
Application filed September 10, 1908. Serial N 0. 452,364.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. CAVILEER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county .of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Plumb-Bob and Chalk-Line Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to plumb bobs and chalk line holders, such as used by carpenters and artisans in laying out their work or marking preparatory to their operations.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple device of this class having 'improved means for operating the reel which is contained in the body of the bob, and
upon which the cord winds, and to provide an arrangement whereby the part which 1'0- tates the reel may be used as a fastener for the line or cord.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved tip or point for the bob.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings formin a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective showing the plumb bob with the rotating member of the reel used as a fastener for the cord; and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section through the a portion only of the cord which extends from the bob; in this view a portion of the tip or point is shown in elevation, the remainder of the tip being shown in cross section.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body of the bob, which is of conical form as shown. The lower end of the bob is provided with a socket 2 which receives a shank 3 which extends upwardly from a conical tip 4. This shank 3 may be attached to the tip 4 in any suitable manner as shown. The tip 4 is hollow and the cavity within the same is provided with a bath 5 of mercury, which materially increases the specific gravity of the lowerend of the bob, insuring that 1t will hang in a vertlcal posltion.
Rotatably mounted in the upper portion of the bob body 1 there is provided .a hollow shaft 6 having an angular opening or bore therein. This opening is' preferabl of square form. Upon the shaft 6 a ce 7 is fixed by means of a set screw 8, and upon this reel the cord 9 is adapted to ,coil as shown. From the reel the cord 9 extends outwardly throu h a guide opening 10f formed centrally 111 a circular cap 11 which screws into the upper end of the bob as indicated. The cap 11 is provided with a centrally disposed neck 12 at the opening 10, and at this point a wiper 13 is attached which is in the form of a small sleeve of cloth. tached to the neck 12 by means of a band or ring 14 of elastic material, and at this point a set screw 15 is provided in the neck which may be screwed up against the cord so as to fix it in the opening 10, as will be readily understood. The outer portion of the sleeve 13 is of reduced diameter, and is provided with an elastic ring 16 which presses the sleeve against the cord and wipes off the superfluous chalk or coloring substance as the cord passes therethrough.
In order to color or chalk the line, the body 1 of the bob is hollow so as to form an enlarged chamber in which the chalk 17 or similar coloring powder is placed.
Referring again to the hp 4, it will be observed that this ti is removable, for which purpose the si e of the bob is rovided with a removable set screw 18 w 'ch screws up against the shank 3 as indicated. The reel 7 may be rotated at any time by means of a balance crank 19 having a handle 20 and a. counter-balance 21 opposite the same. This balance crank is attached to a spindle having a square neck 22 and a long tapered point 23. The spindle is adapted to be inserted in the hollow shaft 6 in the manner indicated, so that the squareneck afli'ords means for rotatin crank, however, may be wit drawn when de sired, and the tapered point 23 may 'be forced into a floor or a wall in the manner indicated in Fi 1, so as to form a fastener for the end of t e cord 9, which cord is rovided with an eyelet or ring 24 in its en for this purpose. p
Access may be'had to the interior of the bob by removing the cap 11, the cap being rotated by seizing the neck 12.
The lower end of this sleeve is' atthe reel. The a rotatably mounted in said body and having a shaft, and a spindle removably mounted in said shaft and adapted to rotate the same,
said spindle having a point enabling it to be used as a fastener.
2. A plumb bob having a body, a reel rotatably mounted thereln, a removable spindle normally mounted in said reel and ada ted to rotate the same, said spindle havlngt a point enabling the same to be used as a fastener, and a cord coiled upon said reel and passing out from the interior of said bob.
3. A plumbbob having a body, a hollow shaft rotatably mounted in said body and haylng an angular opening therein, a 20 spmdle having an angular neck normally received in said angular o ening and adapted to rotate said reel, sai spindle ha a point adapting the same to be used as a astener, a crank for rotating said spindle, and 25 a cord Wrapped upon said reel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of:
two subscribing witnesses.
