PLUMB-BOB.
Application filed May 24, 1919.
To all whom t may concern llc it known that I, PHILIP T. Fasnia, a citizen of the lwnited States, residing at 20035 First avenue, `Seattle, in the county of King` and State of IVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Plumb-Bobs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plumb bobs, and particularly to plumb bolos constructed of more than one kind of material, and provided with adjustable means for protecting the center point of the bob, and for adjusting the position of the bob while suspended; and further with means for holding the suspending cord secure from uncoiling when not in use. y
The objects of this invention are to provide a plumb bob of heavy metal, with core made from a harder metal, such core terminating at one end in a center point, and at the other end in .a threaded post, with an adjustable cylindrical cap threaded inside at one end to screw over either end of such core, and at the other end of such cap an adjustable top through which the suspending cord is passed and by which the latter` may be lengthened or shortened in suspension, by coiling or uncoiling the cord about such cylinder.
My invention is further explained by drawings accompanying my written description. as follows:

Numeral l, represents the main body portion of the plumb bob which is made of brass or other suitable heavy metal. 2 is a central core rod made of steel or other suitable hard metal which is made with a sharp center point at its lower extremity as usual on plumb bobs, and at its other end with a flattened surface, both ends protruding beyond the ends of the said body portion, when in completed construction. Near the upper end 0f the rod 2 is a flange shoulder 2 which lits into a suitable recess in body portion l, and a thread l1 is cut on the top end of the rod, and on the lower portion thereof at l2 Specification of Letters Patent.

above the sharpened point. A suitable nut 3 is threaded on the lower end of the rod and binds the shoulder 2 into the said recess therefor, and the rod is thus secured rigidly as an integral part of the bob.
A cylindrical spool cap t is provided hollowed out a distance and of such size and diameter as to permit the part to be placed over the lower point of the rod 2 and thereby protect said center point from injury while' the instrument is being carried about by the operator. The mouth of the open portion 'of the cylinder is provided with a thread 13 which ts both the threaded ends l2 and ll, and when the said cylinder is not screwed as a protector over the center point, it is screwed onto the top of the rod over thread 1l, and as the supporting` cord l0 extends out from the top portion of such cylinder through hole 8, the said cylinder is used on such top end of the bob when the operator is using the center point in the ordinary manner.
The cylinder l carries a fixed flange al at one end, and at the other end is a revoluble button 5, the diameter of which is approximately the same as that of the flange 4', and with the latter forms a guard at each end of the cylinder for holding in place the suspending cord 10 which is wound around the shank of the cylinder. The closed end of the cylinder is provided with a small hole through which the shank of a rivet 6 passes slidably, said rivet being preferably made integral with the button, and the end thereof 'l is riveted down within the open portion of the cylinderl chamber, and thus 'prevents the button from movingperpendicularly from the cap but at same time permits it to revolve as the rivet 6 forms a pivot therefor. The hole S is cut through the button on an angle, one end thereof terminating in the top center of the button, and the lower end thereof terminating in the base of the button at a point appurtenant to the outside diameter or periphery of the cylinder, the latter being spread slightly at the meeting point, to cause the cord when windingon the shank, to crowd down and away from the button.
A. hole 9 in the side of the cylinder is provided through which the fixed end of the cord 10 is passed and fastened with a knot tied in the said end of the cord, such knot remaining on the inside of the cylinder; and the other portion of the cord is passed up the cord carried to the xed object above the place where the centering is to be done, and the bob so suspended in the approximate position desired above the work; but in actual practice it is frequently necessary to move the position of the'bob up or down slightly, and it is important that such moving be done without releasing the cord from its fixed object above, and in such cases with this instrument the operator turns the button 5 in the desired direction to either draw the cord down through the hole 8 and raise the bob thereby, or turn the button and release additional cord through the hole 8 -from its coils about the shank of the spool of the cylinder. When the operator is through work, the entire cord may be wound in coils about the spool, secure from loosening accidentally.
I claim the following:
1. In a plumb bob, abody portion of heavy material, with a central core rod of harder metal, with center point at one end thereof and a flattened part at the other end, with both ends of such rod extending beyond the ends of the body, and threads on the extending ends of the rod, with an adjustable cap with a thread cut in an open end thereof, and a revoluble button pivotally fastened to the other end of the cap, a diagonal hole through the button, and a hole through the side wall of the cap, and a cord fixed in the latter hole and passing over the side of the cap and up through the hole in the button, with a flange on the end of the cap opposite the button.
2. In a combination plumb bob, and winding spool, and means for adjusting the length of suspending cord while both ends of the cord are fixed, means for connecting the loviiding spool on either end of the plumb 3. In a combination plumb bob, with a heavy body, a center point extending from one end, a stud extending from opposite end, and a cap adjustable over either such extending ends, the cap provided with manually operable means for winding about its periphery a suspending cord and for holding the cord in a wound position about the cap.
il. A plumb bob having an upwardly eX- tended spool like stem and manually operable means mounted inthe stem for winding a cord about the stem, said means adjustable upon either end of the plumb bob and forming a reel upon which the cord can be fully wound when the bob is not suspended thereby.
