NATHAN P. MAKER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
. .Lcttersfatent No.90,456, dated May 25, 1869.
IIPROVEIENT IN DROP-PRESS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and malng part of the lame'.
l andv use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part ofI this "specification, in which- V Figure l'represents a side elevation, partly in sec tion, of my improved bed for drops. l
Figure 2 is a plan or top view ofthe same. Similarletters of referenceV indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new device for adjusting the bed oi' a power'or hand drop press, trip-hammer, upright drill, Yor other similar machine, so that said bed may, at Will, be placed into a horizontal o'r slanting position, as may be desired.
In trip-hammers and drops, it frequently occurs that the bed becomes displaced from the horizontal position by long' wear, and it can, on the present' machines, only be readjusted with the greatest diculty. In boring-machines, it is often desirable to have the bed in an inclined position, so as to bore holes in the same direction through plates or other articles. By provding a bed or frame which can be readily adjusted,
, the above objects can be readily attained, and the difculty overcome.
My`invention'consists'in the bed, having itsfxed base provided with a semispherical cavity, and the adjustable plate, provided with a' semisphen'cal projection, in combination with the oscillating frame and hammer, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
A, in the drawing, represents a'xed bed, made of castiron or other suitable material. From its sides project lugs, d d, so that the side-bars of the frame,
B, may be pivoted to the same, as shown, to allow the said frame to be inclined at will.
The frame can. be pivoted in any other suitable manner, so as to be adjustable. It may, however, be
'also rigidly attached to the bed A, when either no in- 'clination is desired, or when the bed can be inclined,
as hereinafter set forth.
G represents the movable bed-plate. From its under side projects a semispherical block, D, which'ts info a cavity provided in the bed A,'the bed vC being thereby allowed a slight adjustment on this globepivot.
When the bed C is adjusted so that its surface is `level, it is clamped in the desired position, by means of screws',l a a, or their equivalents;
Screws, b b, fitted through the bed G, serve to ad just it when they are turned.
When the cavity in the blockv A is shallower, or the block D is longer than a half globe, the plate .G will receive more play, and can be swung into any desired inclined position. In that case, the swinging frame B is not needed. n
`It is evident that the, bed O would be adjustable in the same degree, if the block D projected from the bed A into a cavity formed in the under side of O.
Having thus described my invention,
, I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersV Patentn The bed for drops, trip-hammers, &c., consisting of the fixed base A, provided with the semispherical cavity, and the plate O, `provided with thesernisphen ical projection D, and adjusted by means of the setscrews a or b, in combination with the oscillating frame B, and the hammer, as l herein described, for the purpose specified.
